Recommend to me a 2nd or 3rd generation S&W auto.

I have a 645, and love it.

Been lookin at a 5906.  I liked them when they came out, and they're pretty cheap now, about 325 on GB.

Any other models you'd recommend?

One version I've seen in one with an adjustable rear sight.  Can I swap this out with an aftermarked fixed night sight?

Thanks,

I never really cared for the ergonomics of them, although they are reliable and durable.

( grew up shooting 1911's, so everything else feels weird )

I heard S&W is running out of parts on these old guns

Go big or go home!

4506-1 or 4506R3 model if you can find it.

1006 is considered to be one of the best 10mm's on the market.

I have 2 4506R3's, 4566R3, 1006 and just picked up a 4516-2 on Friday.

I've got a 5903, 5906, and 4006. Still looking for a 4506, 3913, and 1006. They are getting harder to find.

Suggest looking for a 4900/6900 series, 12rds of 9x19mm (can use the 5900 series also) and weights 24 ozs or so.  I've had several and they have never failed me.

I was just out shooting my 457 today, a nice, easily carried and dependable .45.

I'd recommend a 3rd Gen.  Just seem nicer put together.  The 59 series can be had with both adjustable and non-adjustable sights.  You can also look at the value line 915 and 910 which are basically the same gun with an aluminum frame and some less machining.  I like the 69 series myself.  The 3rd Gen are well made guns.  The police trade ins seem to be some of the best deals out there.  As been said before, they are carried a lot and show all kinds of wear but are usually only fired once or twice a year for dept. qualifications.

Mrs. Slice has had one of those for her ccw for 12+ yrs.  She wouldn't trade it for anything on the market today...

The TSW line is choice for the Money right now.
I have been shooting 2 gun with a 5906TSW I got for 450.00. A 4566TSW is next on the list and sub 500.00 seems common on GB.

Tough choice.  4506, 1006, 4006, 5906, 3913 all come to mind as exemplary

Then you have the performance center and TSW versions with more bells and whistles.

Get into one of the still inexpensive all steel 9mm or .40s&w duty guns and then branch out from there.

While I'm not a huge fan of 40 S&W, I AM a huge fan of my 4006.  It's the only gun in 40 S&W I really enjoy shooting.

4506 or 1006 for a great 5" blaster in a powerful caliber.

3913 for carry
