It's the devil...they will spout chapter and verse that it's not possible and will void your warranty, rip a hole in the space time continuum, make baby jesus cry, etc.

Correct.  No way would the lawyers let them advocate or even acknowledge the possiblity of doing this.

I have an M&P 40 and a M$P 40c.  For the full size, I have a Storm Lake conversion barrel, and for the compact, just a regular S&W 9mm bbl.  The results?

The 9mm compact works 100%, gives pretty decent accuracy, with just a tad of horizontal wobble.  Easily able to hold it on a 10" plate at 25 yards.

The 9mm conversion from Storm Lake works 100%, but is on an entirely different level.  I can tear one ragged hole with a 17 round magazine at 15 yards.

Yes, these are at different ranges, with different model guns.  However, at least for me, I am satisfied.  Now that I have the compact bbl, I am going to buy a Storm Lake conversion bbl for it.  But I am extremely happy with the Storm Lake barrel I do have.  It is not only a conversion barrel, but a match grade one. You really do get what you pay for.  I think everone who has a .40 M&P should get a 9mm barrel, and the S&W barrel is certainly the easiest and least expensive.  However, if you do any sort of competition work, I would spend the extra bucks for a purpose-built conversion barrel.

Earlier, I said that even though I had a S&W 9mm bbl for my compact, I was going to buy a Storm Lake barrel. I left out the word NOT out of there by accident. I thank the OP for bringing this to my attention in the first place. When he did, I was in the process of saving up for a conversion bbl for my 40c. He saved me quite a bit of money.

Yup. Had a 40c at the range a few weeks back and put the M&PL barrel in it to see if it would work. It sure did! Ive been useing my factory 9 threaded barrel in my 40 slide and have not taken it out since I got it. Ive shot around 1k or a bit over in the last couple months with it and it hasnt failed me 1 time.

Got to shoot my 40C with the 9mm barrel today. Just as reported on here the 40 mags hold open with one round left but the 9mm work perfectly. I had forgotten how I enjoyed firing off some rapid 9mm shots.

I have seen older pictures of the 40 and 9 barrel and they had slight differences in profile. I have recently purchased a 9mm barrel and it is identical with measurements all most exactly the same.

Seem SW changed them abit. Anyone have more info on this?

Interesting thread. I have factory 9mm & 357sig barrels and Storm Lake .40 S&W & 9mm (their regular replacement barrel not the "conversion" barrel)

I  have a set of dial calipers and came up with the following measurements:

Dia. @ muzzle....      S&W 357sig  .564"___  S&W 9  .563"___   Stm Lk 40  .565"___   Stm Lk 9 .565"

Chamber ...........      S&W 357sig .593" ___ S&W 9  .593" ___   Stm Lk 40 .594" ___    Stm Lk 9   .593"

Hood..................    S&W 357sig  .424"___ S&W 9  .396"___    Stm Lk 40 .424" ___    Stm Lk 9   .403"

The major difference between the four is the width of the hood .

I fired 30 rounds through each 9mm barrel using a M&P357 pistol and 30 through each with a M&P9.
No malfunctions at all but there is a considerable increase in group size.

Are you referring to in front, at the milled flat spot?

Could be a design change.

It still locks up tight.

Im talking about the point right in front of the barrel hood facing the muzzle crown.  That area is VASTLY different from my 9mm guns as my 9mm guns look like your .40 in that area.

WEIRD!

Ok, that's in front of the hood.

Yea I know it's different than my 40 and every other 9mm I have seen too...but it locks up tight.

I wonder if the new barrels are eliminating that extra machining on that part of the barrel, to save costs and that S&W found it was not needed?

Here is what, I think is, an older barrel-

Does anyone have a 9mm barrel like mine, in their M&P?

As a point of reference, I just received a new OEM 9c barrel from Midway yesterday.  It looks like your .40 barrel with the shoulder forward of the chamber (just like my 40c barrel.)  They were out of stock, so I assume it is factory fresh - as a matter of fact, the baggie has a date code of 080911.

Just got mine from Midway as well.  Unfortunately, time will not allow a shoot until the weekend after Labor day.  I did notice on mine that I could rock the barrel laterally a smidge by putting pressure on the hood w/ my finger, whereas, the .40 barrel would not rock back and forth at all.  Granted, the amount is very small, but I have to believe that there may be some issues concerning accuracy.  Does the 9mm barrel lock up consistently, even though there is a smide of play around the hood?

I would imagine it would work.  I've got a S&W 9mm threaded barrel and the magazines but I haven't bought the gun yet as I am holding out for a used one locally to save some money.  I was going to go to measure the front of the barrel with a micrometer and compare to the photos in the beginning of the thread.  I will post up what the measurements are.

I would highly recommend against grinding any surface off a pressure part.  The surface hardness is heat-treated onto the barrels for a reason, while leaving a certain level of ductility in the substrate metal.  Grinding it off would probably lead to some very bad ju-ju.  I think any metallurgist or reputable gunsmith would agree, let alone S&W's warranty department.  This sounds like a recipe for serious injury to me, and I've seen guys who did barrel work themselves on 1911's who lost eyesight for a while, thank goodness not permanently.  Take the safe route.  A complete new gun will cost you way less than half an ambulance ride, let alone the ophthalmologist consult, surgery, lost work time, and increased insurance rates.  Then there's the almost certainty of a priceless major fail stamp on or about your head, face, and neck area, that would say it all...if you do go ahead with grinding down the barrel's surface in the critical area surrounding the chamber against good advice, will you please video it and assign a survivor to post it on youtube for the rest as an example of what not to do, and the pure entertainment value for sadists.

I would buy a .357 sig barrel, but the ammo is cost prohibited

I received a 9mm barrel I bought off the EE this morning.

As soon I I got home, I swapped out the barrel on my M&P and shot 10 rounds through it. Even with the 40 mags it ran okay. I was actually pleasantly surprised at how tight the lockup was. A couple guys I talked to warned me how sloppy the fit would be, and that's 100% not the case.

I so thankful I found this thread. I had bought my M&P40 with the intent of trading it for a 9, but this thread saved my from doing that (as well as saving me money).

Thanks again Dog1 !

Was at the range today and finally remembered to post a review.

So far 1 bobble when I first got it.  I do remember the round being very soft in recoil though, or somehow, off in some way.  Light load/squib?  My previous outings have used American Eagle 115gr and 124gr & Blaser aluminum 115gr, totalling roughly 550-600rnds.  Today's outing was 250rnds of Ruag 124gr.  Accuracy is on par w/ the .40 barrel.  Was very happy w/ my performance today for the most part.  Once warmed up, consistent sub 2" groups were the norm.  Most times, 4 shots in a clover leaf and a flyer about an inch or so away.  Had a couple of 1" groups though when I could hold it together.  All groups fired were 5rnd groups at 12-15 yards.  As far as I'm concerned, and happily surprised, that accuracy is as good as I would have hoped.

I do have concerns on the longevity of the weapon using this setup though.  Perhaps someone could shed some light on something someone wrote about using the M&P 9mm barrel in the M&P40.  This poster mentioned something to the effect that the lugs on the underside of the barrel are a smidge shorter than the .40 barrel and this could lead to premature wear on the associated parts.  Theoretically, this could lead to basically a blowback system vs. a delayed locked breach (do I have this term right?) since the parts would wear incorrectly?  It sounds plausible, but what the hell do I know?

BTW, I feel like a traitor to my Glocks saying this, but wow, my M&P shoots well.  I had my Gen2 G19 at the range today also.  I was better w/ the M&P.  My M&P as an Apex sear and I polished the internals as recommended on the Burwell site.  Also relieved the area under the trigger guard a little.  For me, Glocks can be very accurate, but they take loyalty to that platform and a high level of focus.  The M&P shoots naturally.  The gun comes to line of sight effortlessly and rapid fire sequences provide for reasonably tight clusters of shots vs a wider spread as compared to most Glocks that I've shot.  Shooting for accuracy, for me they shoot to the same level, but the intuitive reactive feel of the pistol in quickened shooting  really moves it ahead of the Glock.  I should caveat this w/ saying this blurb applies to the 9mm/40 frames.  For me, the G21SF that I've fired works a lot better than the M&P45 that I picked up.  I'm starting to contemplate selling off a few Glocks and replacing them w/ M&P's.  Do want to get an M&P9 w/ TS and FSS as my next pistol.  Just ordered a Walther PPQ though, so we'll see.  At the range today, got to shoot an M&P9C on its 1st outing.  Very nice pistol as well.  Forgot how gritty new triggers are in these guns.
