Last Spring I was at a gun show looking for extra mags for my model 96 (40 cal).  A dealer tried to sell me a 15 rd factory mag for a model 92F (9mm) and told me that it would work with 40 cal ammo also.  I didn't need to take the chance so I didn't consider it any further.

Since then, I have gotten curious about this since used (cheap) 40 cal mags aren't that common around my area but 9 mm mags are.  I've borrowed a factory 15 rd 9mm mag to compare dimensions, etc.  It's identical in size, shape, etc. to one of my 10 rd 40cal mags.  It can fit 11 40cal rounds, fits into the handgun well, and I'm able to manually work the slide and feed/eject all rounds with no problems.

Has anyone here heard of this possibility?

I don't really need to resort to 9mm mags and have no current plans on trying to use them but it would be nice to know that resource is available if I did need them.

I've heard of others using the 9 mags for their 40 S&W rounds. But only for practice. Not for carry or duty use.

I would be hesitant to use something for something that it is not designed to be used for.  I understand your frustration on getting magazines.  I just picked up a .40 beretta, and am seeing tons of the 9mm mags all over the place, but no .40s

This is why I went with the 9mm caliber, instead of the .40.  That, and 9mm ammo being cheaper than .40.  I do believe the .40 to be a better caliber than the 9mm, though.

My brother in law gave me a military M9 15 round 9mm magazine... it will hold 11 .40 cartriges, and seems to feed.  I don't think I would trust it though.  It seemed to bulge just a bit.  And couple that with the fact that it only holds 1 more round.

I know a guy that replaced the 92F mag with a 96 follower and it has been working for him flawlessly.

OTOH, I have a 96 Border Marshall and I was able to get spare mags for it easily.

I have done this for years now with thousands of rounds and never had a failure to feed.
