Looking at getting some military surplus mags for my 92fs. Need a good deal on like 6 or more. I have 3 Beretta mags but need more for range use, classes and stuff.

Is it worth the savings?

Should I just bite the bullet and go all MecCar mags?

Any to steer clear of?

Recommendations of good place to get them?

Thanks in advance.

Unless you find some stupid cheap I'd just pay the couple bucks more for new Mecgars.

My experience has only been finding used GI ones for like the $15 dollar range and you can find the 18 round Mecgars for like $24.

I'm all for saving money but to me that wasn't much of a bullet to bite.

See you're in TX - are you near a base by chance?

When I was on AD, I was able to purchase 30+ CMI brand mags from Camp Gieger for $5.47 ea.  This was just pre or post S. Hook; not sure if bases are still selling them/if there have been any policy changes.

I found some for $14.95 free shipping, and for 6 would be $89.70. 6 megcar s would be $144. So a savings of $54.30

The last time I bought a large quanty of surplus mags I got them for $9 shipped. At that price I think they are worth it. At $15 no way. I would rather have a few mags I know that work over a pile of questionable mags.

Same...most of my range mags are USGI & function great.  I'm not aware where you can buy them any longer. I have not seen any for sale in some time...

The good thing usgi have over mecgar is the spring is easily replaceable. Does mecgar sell just the spring?

You could always just buy some Wolff springs I would imagine. Or call Mec-Gar. That might be something they can sell direct.

I have about 40 surplus CMI 15rd mags in my stash. They have all been GTG like all the factory mags I have. I have read that the ones made before 05 choked up in sandy environments because they didn't have a special coating inside the body. In my experience however the pre-05 ones I have have been flawless in everyday environments. I used to buy them all day long for $8 a pop. The savings are definitely worth it.

Mil-Surp mags are junk in my experience

Spend the extra dough and get Mec-Gar 18's

This.

Many of the Checkmate G.W.O.T. .GOV mags were not reliable due to the rough texture inside the magazine body causing drag on the follower

To be fair that was the pre-2004 CM mags. Post 2004 mags seem to be pretty solid. I have about 50 of them and they all function in my various Beretta's including my CX4.

And even pre 04 CM mags are fine in normal civilian usage.

That's been my experience as well. I still prefer the mec gar mags due to the higher capacity

My experience is Checkmate and Airtronics mags have good bodies (finish* & fit), followers, and floorplates. The weak part are the springs as every single malfunctioning CM/AIR magazines ran like OEM with new Wolff +10% springs or BUSA replacements.

I won't pay over $10 for a NIW M9 mag or $5 for used, especially since Beretta/MDS/MecGar 92 magazines are so abundant and cheap.

As inexpensive as Mecgar mags are, I only buy these or factory, which I guess are Mecgar manufactured anyway. I would buy new mags and keep your used mags for range use if you are concerned. By the time you buy used mags and replace any parts, you could have bought new ones for a couple dollars more. Just my opinion and experience.

I had a lot of the pre-2004 mags and scrubbed the insides with oil and a wire brush

No problems ever after that, cheap mags that work are the best mags

I have had no issues with Check-Mate mags that I bought on base before I got out of the Marines.  Think I paid $5 for each brand new.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm going to get some 18rounders and keep an eye out for super cheap surplus mags. Can't find any cheaper than just under 15 bucks so I guess not worth it.
