Mags for the 87 Cheetah would be easier to get.
They're both great guns. Had an 87 for awhile, threaded, now just have the 87T.

How is the reliability compared to other popular 22 pistols?

Mine worked perfectly with bulk pack plated, suppressed or not.
FYI, the 87 Cheetah comes with 8-round mags, but you can also use the 87Target 10round mags. The difference is the larger rubber basepad. The mag body is the same length so there is no gap or anything.
Model 89 Target mags also work, same mag body length but they are 8-round too.

I think the 87 is sexier but the 70 is about 1/2 - 2/3 the price. No real reliability difference to speak of but my 70 was a .32.

I'd go with the 87. I like the looks of the Cheetahs much more than the 70 series. (And this is coming from a guy with one 86, and a pair of 70s, a 70T in .32, and a 70S in .380.)

I recently picked up an 87 and love it. So far I've put about 550 rounds of various cheap .22 through it with zero malfunctions. I've never shot the model 70 so can't compare the two.

I'd love to pick up a Cheetah some day.

My father has a model 70 in 22 and its the most accurate gun we have. I've never seen it malfunction either.

I think it comes down to whether you want DA/SA or SA. I own the 87 Cheetah and it is totally reliable and accurate. It also feels great in the hand and the similarity to the 92 series in appearance and takedown is an additional plus. I think the 87 is just about perfect for a .22. It also has the benefit of being the perfect .22 to train someone with. Unlike most rimfires, the 87 functions, handles, takes down, etc. just like its centerfire brethren. The best quote I have heard is, "its a real gun its just chambered in .22LR". If you have the coin for one, don't hesitate. If you don't like it, doubtful, they retain their value ridiculously well.

I just bought an 87 Cheetah last weekend for $500 and it was NIB. The barrel is headed to Tornado Tech in a week for threading so I can use my SWR Warlock on it. I have been wanting one for quite some time but they are hard to find and expensive. This will be a nice addition to my Walther PPKs .22 that currently wears the suppressor.
