Correct me if I am wrong here but my understanding is that the P229E2 that has been discontinued is in reference to the grip.

Meaning the E2 was/is a one piece modular grip that was to reduce circumference of the grip. The underlying frame is capable of mounting any current P229 grips.

Yes, I put Hogue finger groove grips on mine.

They will fit any P229 frame.  Some may require a different main spring guide rod setup.
