So, I wasn't sure how many rounds have gone through my P229 since I am the second owner.  I figured it would be a good idea to replace the recoil spring.  I'm sure glad I did.  Here are pictures of the original spring verses the Sig factory replacement (white end).

Have you put the new white one in your 229 for a day yet?
It will shrink some after you lock the slide back and leave it like that for an hour.

Yep.  It's been in for a day now.  Hoping to break it in at the range this weekend.

That's what, 3/16" compression?

Does SIG have a spec for spring length?

It's hard to tell from the picture but it was .25".  There was a noticeable difference in locking the slide back.

If there are no broken strands the original spring is still good.

That didn't need replaced at all.     I've got a 226 9mm with almost 5500 rds before I replaced it and it wasn't malfunctioning.  the difference in the springs was almost an inch

it just has a smoother cycle. a new spring it tight and needs to get broken it

Although the original spring looks just fine, and springs will take a set and stop, you absolutely have the right idea. You don't know what happened before it made it to your hands, so before carrying it, I would replace all springs (except mainspring, but go ahead if you like). Be sure to test fire for reliability afterwards.

For $7.50 I figured it was cheap insurance.
