I just found a W, German 226 from 1987. Bought my first in 85 that was identical to this. Had forgotten about the scalloped rails. What's was the info on this and when did they quit?

Mud rails sounds right, that's what they were called when I bought mine. Supposed to help the slide function when dirty.
If you don't mind, what did you have to pay for this German beauty ?

I'm thinking serial numbers 137xxx thru 157xxx had the mud rails

Have to check mine.

Mine's a W. German P226, and noticed that OP's photo has Herndon, VA on it.

IIRC, mine only says Made in West Germany on the right side of the slide.

Don't recall Herndon, VA being on the left side of my slide.

85-87 should say Tyson's Varner VA. 87-90 is Herndon. After that Exeter.

I just picked up a west German 226 also. Mine was a police trade in.
Looks great other the there was a laser mounted on the TG so there are two little round gouges.

How does one determen the year?

There is a date code that consists of two letters stamped on the slide under the muzzle.

A-0
B-1
C-2
D-3
E-4
F-5
G-6
H-7
J-8
K-9

So a date code of KE would be "94" as in 1994, as an example.
