Has anyone done it?

Like this?

or this?

Both are Cerakote, which is basically a high temp, cured ceramic paint. I wouldn't go spraying rustoleum on your pistol, it won't last long before wearing.

That's really nice work. Thanks!

Cerakote or glock factory refinishing depending on the type you went are both proven.

Had a couple duracoated, a couple moly resined and a couple cerakoted. All turned out ok, some thicker than others

How do the cerakoted slides hold up to wear?

It wears just like any other coating. The corners of my slide are wearing due to the rubbing against the kydex holster

I'll go with one I just painted.  I picked up the gun from another member here almost 7 years ago IIRC, and he had cerakoted (or some other finish) on the slide for a dark green color, but the frame is more of a tan, so I took some krylon and spray painted the slide tan.  It's worn at the leading edges and a couple other high spots, but still going strong.
