I'd go with a gen. 4.  You get all of the frame upgrades and an extra mag.  If you want to use aftermarket single coil springs, lone wolf sells an adapter.

Unfortunately being in CA, I won't get the advantage of the standard capacity mags, and will have to substitute 10-rounders.

Gen 2, no finger groves in the frame. Won't debate the plus/minus of finger groves but there is a reason most combat pistols don't have them.

Gen 4 for me

- Texture
- Larger mag release
- Dual recoil spring
- Option of backstraps, even though I don't use them

I didn't think you could buy a gen 4 in CA.

I agree with this.

I'm real happy with both of my gen3 G20s. They fit my hands well and the finger grooves don't pose a problem.

Pros to gen 4-
Backstraps
Extra mag
Texturing
The only pro I can see to a 3 over a 4 is you may be able to find a good price on a used on
I just got a gen 4 and absolutely love it

A little porn of my gen 4, I have added an glock extended slide stop and 3.5 connector

Happy with my Gen 3 G20 and made it even more versatile with a complete Gen 3 G21 upper Found it here in the EE for a GREAT price !!! Keeping eyes open for conversion barrels in the EE.

It fits good in my hand (non SF), it reliable and eats any ammo I give it.  I like the grip texture.

I would just go hold a few and pick the one you like best.

Not to mention that without backstraps it's the same grip as the 20SF. and with a backstrap you can make it like a Gen 3.

I have one of the Lipsey's FDE Gen 4 G20s.

I'll echo the pluses of the Gen 4, being the extra factory mag (even if you only get a 10 rounder it is still one extra mag), the grip inserts and the newer dual recoil spring.

Until the end of the year, when a new law goes into effect, we still have the ability to purchase firearms not on the "CA Not Un-Safe" list under the Single Shot Exemption program.

If you're not familiar with SSE, a semi auto pistol not on the approved list may be received by a CA FFL that performs SSE's.  The semi pistol is then converted to Single Shot capability, and then transferred to the buyer....at which time the buyer can then legally convert the pistol back to it's original state and function.  SSE typically adds about $150 to the cost of a pistol.

Beautiful weather isn't free.

Unfortunately the LGS's in CA won't have the full line available to finger.  I was able to check out the fit on a g20 SF and tried to compare it to g23 g3 (non-SF), as the g4's are not for sale in CA.  The "SF" didn't seem to make a radical difference to me as I have big paws to start with, but I was more concerned with if there is a difference in grip angle on the g3 to the g4.

I really like the full FDE...and was thinking about going that way myself.  However, I only see it offered with 15's....Have you seen it listed anywhere with 3 10's ?

The all FDE guns are Lipsey's exclusives, and to my knowledge they only come with 3 15's. Perhaps your dealer could contact Lipsey's and see if they offer a Cali 10 rounder substitution deal? Or perhaps contact them directly and ask?

Gotcha, I didn't even catch the CA thing at first.

+1, never liked the large frame Glocks until the gen4's came out.

If you don't need to mount a light, I prefer the Gen 2.

I just did a finger groove removal and my version of a Gen 1 front grip texture on a Gen 3 G20 frame and I've been very happy with it.

It was my first try at grip modification on an already modified frame that I bought very reasonably.  Someone had rounded off the trigger guard and I picked it up for $165.00.  Figured if I screwed it up, I wouldn't be out much.  I put my 20L top end on it and put my Gen 2 21 back together on its original frame.

Gen 4 if you can get one. Gen 3 SF if you can't.

It is only a slight reduction in distance to the trigger, but it makes a BIG difference. The reason you couldn't tell with the 23, is because the 23 has a smaller sized frame.

If there wasn't an SF (or SF feel with the gen4 sans backstrap) I would not own a Glock. Period.

Mine is a gen 3, but if I were buying a new one now it would be a gen 4. I have only bought one gen 3 since buying my first gen 4, and that was only because the gen 4 26s weren't out yet. I don't plan to buy anything but gen 4s going forward.

With the exception of 1 Gen 3 Glock 23, the rest of my Glocks are Gen4. Once the issues were resolved by Glock the Gen4's have been just fantastic.
