Im in the market to purchase a 9mm Glock, and trying to decide between the 17 and 19. Im going to be using the gun for tactical classes where it will either be holstered in the GCode INCOG on the Haley Strategic D3 Chest Rig. If not there than on my hip. I would also like to use this weapon as a CCW. Im 6'2'', and have large frame and hands. Im worried that I could possibly have an issue with my fingers getting in the way of doing mag changes with the 19??
Any suggestions or ideas to think about would be appreciated... Also, Is either the 17 or 19 considered to be more of a "Tactical" version?? Thanks for your help |

G19. Can do everything the 17 can, and is more concealable. There's a reason it's known as the thinking man's pistol.
|
|
The 19/23 size Glocks are plenty big enough to use in classes yet small enough for ccw. I'd go to a gun shop to see how your hands are on both. I'm 6'2 too with decent size hands and with a slight trigger undercut I can get my whole hand on the 19/23 frame.

I have a couple of 19s and a single 17 for when I want something different. I carry a 19 and so is my spare. I'm a big guy and the 19 just feels like home.
As has been said 87,000 times on this site, if you can only choose one pistol, make it a Glock 19. I prefer mine in a 3rd generation flavor, but we can debate that part later. |
|
Try the 19 and then the 17 if possible. I'm 6'1" and have a large frame, and the finger grooves on a 19 are in precisely the wrong place for me. I can't get a grip on it to save my life, in factory condition; with every shot I have to regrip the gun as my fingers sit on top of the bumps, and slide off under recoil. I had to grind off the bumps in order to make the gun useful. I don't have a 17 but everyone I've talked to that had the same issue as I did with the 19, tells me the 17 does not have this problem out of the box.

I was recently in your situation, I have large to xl size hands and I really wanted the 17 because I wasnt crazy about the slightly smaller gripped 19, but I needed something more concealable. well, I went with the 19 and I have no regrets, and its quickly becoming my favorite pistol (even over my beloved 21 ;) ).
I did undercut the trigger guard to give me a little more room which helps... but I can get all my fingers on the grip, and only part of my palm comes off.. it doesnt make any issue for mag changes either. the 19 conceals even in basketball shorts and a fitted tshirt for me... its not the most comfortable if carrying appendix when there is a lot of sitting or bending, but it gets the job done well. |

I'd go with the 19. If you want more tactical take a look at the 34. The 19 does a great job filling a lot of needs though.
|
|
I own 26s, 19s and 17s (a 34 will be next). If I could only have one, it would be a 19.

The solution to the finger groove issue is to buy a used gen 2 19 without the grooves
I do not have big hands but have shot owned and carried many glocks and by far my gen 2 19 is the most comfortable ( oddly enough my 26 ends up giving me better results on the range with slightly better at speed groups out to 25 yards and slightly faster times on runs that do not require a mag change) |
|
I prefer the 17. I used to be of the opinion that the 19/23 sized-guns were the ideal CCW pistols, which Im sure is still true for a lot of people. But after trying out a 17, I realized it was almost as easy to conceal. Its the same width, and the slide length doesn't affect its concealability. What makes it harder is the added length of the grip. But with a little extra cant in the holster, that became a non-issue. Its just as comfortable as carrying the 19 for me (6'1'' 180lbs). I am happy with the two extra rounds, longer sight radius, and easier use with gloved hands.

You will eventually have a 26, 19, and 17 once you make a decision. That makes the decision easier. Put these three numbers in a hat and pick one.

The G19 loses about 10% to the G17 in timed drills on paper for score according to some very good shooters. The G19 carries just a bit better, the G17 shoots just a bit better. Having had both I really think it is just a matter of preference and I chose the G17 for CCW as I can conceal it AIWB no problem. Even so I really think that the G19 is probably the most capable but still carryable pistol around and it is a good choice, if you miss it isn't because of that pistol.

Got rid of my Gen3 17 and bought THREE Gen4 19's after I realized how much I loved my fish gill 23 RTF2 compact frame.
One of the 19's is all tuned up, polished internals, 3.5 ghost connector, springs, etc... Still looking at fiber sights for it. The other is 100% bone stock and unfired at this point, the old "one is none two is one" Third went to my dad, he never liked Glocks as he came from highpowers and Berreta 92fs. He loved shooting my first 19 I bought used so when I ordered a new one I had him grab one also without much persuasion lol. The gen4 19 for me is the most well rounded firearm I own and any one in my family can pick it up and shoot better than normal with little practice. I find the smaller grip of the Gen4 got rid of the usual low left point of impact the Glocks are known for., even for myself. GET THE Gen4 34 before the 17, or a 19 then a 34 :) |

Been carrying a G23 for 20 years. I have pretty big hands and the 23 fits like a glove.
I just won a G19 at a match and am looking forward to shooting the ever loving piss out of it. |

I'm a huge fan of the G19, but a pretty small dude.
If I could have only one Glock, it would be the G19. If I planned to do a lot of tactical type shooting, and was a bigger guy, I'd probably consider the G34 also. It's my go to weapon for matches/training sessions. ~g |

View Quote If you are looking for a "tactical" gun and understand the connection between sight radius and accuracy, then strongly consider the G34 (there's a reason it's dubbed the practical/tactical pistol). The G34, unless a blue labeled gun, will come with a (-) connector (the blue labeled guns come with the standard connector). The grip is the same size as the G17; just the slide is longer. I'm 5'9"/180 lbs and I am able to carry mine just fine with a Raven Concealment Systems holster. I've previously owned a G17, G19, G22RTF2, G27, G30SF. The only Glock I own now, or will ever own, is a G34. |

Get your self a Glock 19. Easier to conceal than a G17. Use as your CCW piece and bedside gun.

Hi Nick,
I got a model 17 about four hundred rounds ago. It is my first pistol. All prior being revolvers. Fabulous pistol, easy to use, dead simple, great first gun, very reasonably priced ammo , and mild recoil, and easy to clean I guess you can tell I like the gun. I recommend Model 17. P.S. for votes of confidence check out the international list of agencies using model 17 in Wikipedia under Glock model 17. |

Since you mentioned that you may want to carry it concealed, then the G19 wins. Otherwise it's a toss up and would depend on which one fits your hands and that you shoot better.

The 19 is definitely easier to conceal for me but, I prefer using the 17 for classes and competitions between the two. Having said that, I've been running a G34 for the past year as a replacement for the 17 and have been very happy with it so far. |

The 19 is a must. Later a 34 will complete the perfect combo.

Personally the 19 is my favorite. These were our sidearms in my last unit, and we had some BIG boys, no one ever complained about them being too little. I have a 17 now issued to me (contractor). If you think you may CC go with the 19, but if just for range/HD go with the 17.

I own all Glocks in 9x19 but the model 17L. Being 5'11 and having somewhat longer fingers than the average (no hicock45 by any means here) I must say the G17 (and 34 for that matter) feel SO much better in my hands than the G19.
Give both a try before dropping the hammer on either one. Just my two cents. HTR. |
|
I like them both. Hell, I like all of the Glocks. I have found that the G19 feels better in my hand, but I can shoot the G17 way better. It's weird. I don't think either of them are easy to conceal, but that's just me. I think the G26 is hard to conceal comfortably, but that's not really what you are asking anyway...
Try them both if possible and get what you like. Neither is the wrong choice. |
|
6'1, 250 - Glock 19 all the way. Gen 3, Gen 4 - Love them, looking for Gen 2. Even looking at a 30SF because of the perfect size.

"Ol' Blackie" is the name of my G19 Gen 4 made in USA Glock.
I parkerized it flat black and installed all black steel Ameriglo GT500 sights. I also installed a flat black aluminum slide plate with nothing on it. I also installed the non-loaded chamber indicator extractor and polished the locking block, fps and trigger gizmos. It's my everything pistol. CCW, plinking, shooting paper, plates, and misc crap on the sides of creeks and stuff. The 17 is too big, the 26 is too small. The 19 will force you to carry 15+1 rounds over the 26. |
|
I previously thought the 19 was the best Glock, then I got a 17. The grip on the 17 is much better if you have anything over medium sized hands (your fingers actually fit the grooves), the size difference is negligible in terms of concealment and you get +2 rounds. My BIL and two friends have recently seen the light and swapped their 19s for 17s.
ETA: gen4 > gen3 and yes my avatar is still a gen3 19 |
|
The order of block purchases should be: G19, then G17 .hen after those 2 do whatever you want. But those 2 are a must!!!!!
|
|
If you are able to easily conceal a G17, then that's the one to get. If there are any doubts on proper concealment, then go for the G19. You will not be disappointed with either one. Then get the G26 for light clothing/summer days.

Thanks for your help View Quote I consider the 17 more "tactical", but i'm about as tactical as an office worker that dry fires a lot, carries every day, and shoots 1200 rounds a month in practice and USPSA/IDPA matches. The AIWB or strong side concealed would favor the 19, but the 17 has 2 more rounds and a larger frame (longer sight radius, more frame to grip onto). I like shooting the 17 better, but i like conceal-carrying the 19 better. In cold weather, when i can rock a coat and an OWB setup, i like the 17. MY performance with a 17 and 19 is very similar, but slightly better with the 17. I think that's because it's closer in size to the 34 that gets about 95% of my trigger time when i'm practicing. Bottom line, pick em both up, shoot em, and decide what you like better on the range. The differences between the two will be marginal to anyone that's spent a good bit of time on either gun. As for mag changes...the longer frame will be easier to work with if you have big hands where your pinkie can cover the magwell...but again, it depends on how your paws fit the gun. Not all 6'2" guys have the same size hands. |
|
I use a G17 with a TLR1 on duty, I carry a G19 off duty. I have very large hands and the 19 works fine for mag changes. 6' 200 lbs.
