If we can come up with a way to establish video evidence of successfully accomplishing said feat, I can award FAM Challenge coins to at least the first five who make it (probably a few more than that). I'm sure I can get together some other goodies as well. How's that for a challenge? That would be very cool if you're into doing it. |

Tag. I want to try this one next time I have a shot timer around. If you have an iphone their is a shot timer app from surefire that is free. I haven't had a chance to use it other than some clapping to see how it reported but you can set it up however you want and it will email your results if you want it to. Kind of a neat way to keep records really. That's what I've been using until I can get myself a real shot timer. It works surprisingly well. |

What kind of shot timers are you guys using? I've been practicing and in dry fire I was getting an average of about 1.8 drawing from concealment (two shirts, combat cut Crossbreed IWB holster), going off safe, and squeezing off an aimed shot (dry) with a random start beep. I'm as low as 1.4 and as high as 2.2 when I'd snag on my shirt. This was with essentially zero pressure (no quals, spectators, competitors and certainly no one shooting at me). PACT Club Timer III here. One of the better timers on the market, used by most of the pro instructors I've trained with. Is it sensitive enough to pick up dry firing? |

I just wanted to bump this thread. I was hoping to get to try this today, but the match ran late and after it was over no one wanted to stick around for more. I'm hoping to get to try this soon, but my range access has been limited lately.
Anyway, you guys that haven't done this should give it a shot. This is a good challenge; let's get some more participation! |

Does anyone know where I can get a shot timer for a decent price? (college student here).

1st off, my iphone Surefire timer didn't work worth a damn last time I was out. I tried sensitivity up and down and it would only pick up sporadically for me, but the guy 10 lanes down, picked up every shot. I'm not sure if the overhead cover was amplifying the sound too much and it was just clipping out and not registering or what.
2nd in the challenge when it says shoot from the ready, is that low ready, high ready, compressed ready, etc?
|
|
I tried it on an indoor Bass Pro Range. Not ideal and couldn't do the muli-target part of the challenge. I was with a newer shooter who has done nothing but try to hit the bullseye at 7yds. We both had a lot of fun and ran through the different stages a couple of times. We had the range to ourselves which was nice. What I didn't know was the range officers there have CC TV and were watching. When we were done and leaving he asked us if we were Law Enforcement. We both said no. Then he asked if we were military. We said no, but I added I was former infantry. He then told us that double taps were not really allowed, but he could see we knew what we were doing, so he let us continue. He said they never have guys in there running drills, it was nice to see.
I will try the actual challenge shortly. |

You can't use a "gamer" ready where you are already aimed in on target, but other than that low, high, doesn't matter. Whatever ready position you want to use. Quoted:
He then told us that double taps were not really allowed, but he could see we knew what we were doing, so he let us continue. Well good on him for not being a weenie, but holy friggin' Christmas...no "double taps"? I carry a gun in case I need to use it in a gunfight. People shoot fast in gunfights...about 1 shot every 1/4 of a second. Range rules that say you can't fire more than X rounds a minute are gayer than Liberace. |

I'm gonna try this next time I'm out. Pretty sure I can get time, or hits but probably not both

Glad I came across this thread! I ran across this qualification a few years ago and thought it was a great skill builder and benchmark. I even went to the extent of buying a couple of the correct targets as templates, and then spray-painted several dozen facsimilies onto butcher paper to use as my targets.
Funny thing is, all that effort and somewhere I lost steam, or, more likely, got sidetracked by another project/idea. This has rekindled my interest. As to whether I can pass it, I'm a little doubtful that I could do it cold right now. Couple of years ago maybe, but due to a move and new job I haven't shot much in the past couple of years, and practically no pistol in 9 months. I'll post my results. Don"t laugh! Two things that impressed me about this qual course were that it was a real challenge (unlike some police and sheriff courses I was familiar with, and the fact that no warm-up was allowed. Walk in and shoot it cold, just like real life. |
|
OK, so I stole some time today and headed up to the range. Didn't videotape myself as it would have increased the hassle factor considerably, and I don't have a good tripod. So I found the targets I'd made several years ago (described in previous post), grabbed a few guns and headed up. Luckily I was alone on the pistol range.
The guns were: 1) Glock 19 Gen 2 I think (no finger-grooves), bone stock except for a set of Heinie Straight 8s. 2) Glock 34, also with Heinie Straight 8s, a reduced trigger pull kit (Lightning I think), non captive Wolff recoil spring and a steel guide rod (non-weighted). 3) CZ75B, stock except for a replacement fiber-optic (red/orange) front sight. 4) Sig P226 9mm that I've had forever, bone stock––complete with lousy Sig finish and surface rust in the grop panel screw slots. 5) Kimber Classic 1911 .45, also with Heinie Straight 8s. Except I forgot the ammo. Holsters: For the Glocks I used a kydex TacPro straight-drop OWBthat I got for a good price from Brownells years ago. Haven't heard of them since, but I like it. I use it both for CCW and range use, but it does conceal well for an OWB. For the CZ and Sig I used a leather slide holster designed for the Sig that I got from Dillon several years ago. Galco leather double mag pouch for all. Cover garment was a lightweight fleece vest. What I found in running the course was that, not surprisingly, I improved slightly as I became more familiar with the course. The largest variable was getting over my nerves, meaning that in the first run I didn't know how close or far I'd be from the score, so I rushed things and was sloppy; decidedly NOT smooth. Onc e I recorded my scores and realized I was close, I settled down some and things went better. |

Continued because my computer was getting funky...
I ran it a total of 5 times, starting and ending with the G19. Interestingly my last run with the same gun was a clean (perfect) score. I have a feeling my second run was clean as well and I had two rounds go through the same hole, but I took the -5 just to be sporting. It just felt good, I can't imagine I missed the entire paper. Subjective impressions were that it was definitely easier to shoot the full-sized guns over the G19. The fiber optic sight really helped the front sight stand out against the target for this relatively close range and quick shooting. The CZ was fired exclusivey SA, condition 1 to start, The 226's DA first shot pull slowed me down in string 1, and the hits were poorer quality. After that, the Sig just shoots great. It's interesting, because even though the Sig has a higher bore axis than the other three designs, in rapid fire it just returns right to zero for me and the short light reset allows for fast and accurate hits. The slight differences between runs was due to minor variations or bobbles; sometimes the difference between a slide closing when I slammed a magazine home, or not. I'm confident that if I were to go try it again now or in a month, my "cold" score would be much closer to my runs 2-5, and would be a PASS. I say this not because I improved, but rather because I now know what to expect, and so I won't rush. All in all I think it's a good qual course to use as a benchmark, and to use as drills. I've included a PIC of the targets I made just for grins in case anyone wondered what it looked like. eEdited to say sorry for the difficult to read formatting. I tried to clean it up but no joy. |
|
dogcaller - would you mind taking a photo of that target with the critical dimensions measured out? Maybe just write on it with a dark sharpie or something.
Things like: total width, total height point that narrowing starts, height and width of narrowed portion. height, width and position of "a" zones in the head and torso I've got some IDPA targets laying around but I don't know how this compares and I'd like to create a template. Thanks.

Observer, here you go. I don't recall that the inner black boxes have any significance, so I didn't measure them.

I could have done it a year ago when I was shooting 2-3 times a week. Then I could consistently do a round target from concealment in 1.5 and a reload from concealment in 1.85. That was using a GLOCK 19, Threat Solutions UCR and Blade-Tech pouch under a buttoned shirt.
Now days I pick up junior from the sitter every evening and I'm lucky to shoot twice a month. I think I could still get close if not pass. |

I'm not a very good pistol shooter so this was good structured practice and now I have something to compare it to. But no way to sugarcoat it....I failed the first time I shot it. Today I made it to the range and in my defense I have not practiced this course of fire before and some of the drills I was shooting for the first time ever. Originally I was going to dry run this with my airsoft gas G17 but I only got to the #3 drill before my wife put a stop to it...I guess it's louder in the house at midnight than I thought! Just for s&g I went ahead and posted the airsoft times where available. Glock 17 1 - 1.72, 1.55 = pass(airsoft times = 1.20, 1.16) 2 - 1.13, 1.18 = pass (airsoft times = 1.16, 1.16) 3 - 2.79, avg time between-0.37s = pass(airsoft times= 2.0, avg time between =.19s) 4 - 3.65, 3.69 = fail 5 - 1.57, 1.53 = pass 6 - 2.98, 2.91 = pass 7 - 4.53, 4.27 = fail Drill #7 really pointed out that I need to work on my reload drills. Again this is the first time Ive shot this and had no warm ups, so after failing the test I worked on drill #7 and on the fourth run I got it down to 3.51, 3.33. I ran out of time and due to some technical difficulties I lost the first three videos I was trying to shoot with my laptop webcam. So pretty much a fail there as well. Accuracy was acceptable (a BIG THANKS! to whoever posted the pics with all the detailed target measurements). I only took the time to draw out the pattern on one IPSC target, it fits pretty close to the 'a' zones but is a little more forgiving. Since I only did the one target I used standard IPSC's for drills #5 and #6 then compared them to the overlay. Thanks for the drill, it gives me something to work towards and highlighted my slow-ass reload times. I feel reasonably confident I can pass it next time and I'll get the camera rigged up by then. |

Finally got to try this out. (Most of my shooting lately has been either at a match or an indoor range.) The downside was that I forgot my hi-def hatcam, so I had to film it with a digital camera.
I used an IDPA target and counted the "zero" and "down one" as the scoring zone. I think that approximated the offical target fairly closely. The course was shot cold - no practice draws, no warm-up shots. (My friend that ran the timer shot it too, he was 1/100th of a second over on the first drill, but he passed all the other drills and the hits on target.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IN248jJZyOE Drill - Run 1 - Run 2 1 - 1.64 - 1.38 2 - 0.93 - 0.89 3 - 1.95 4 - 2.97 - 2.95 5 - 1.13 - 1.38 6 - 2.68 - 2.41 7 - 3.08 - 3.08 Total score 146: PASS Time standards: PASS Equipment used: Pistol: Glock 19 9mm Holster: Comp-Tac slide OWB Mags: Carried in two Blackhawk single mag holders Concealment: cheap vest from Sportsmans Guide Great drill, thanks for sharing. I wish more people would give this a shot. I'm also looking forward to the next challenge thread. ETA: my score was actually 144 - I suck at math. |

Rna through this drill with my new timer. I was just there to play with the timer. 1, 4 and 7 are definetly the hard drills. My biggest issue is getting the cover garment out of the way. I can sporatically pass these portions, but not regularly. I ranged from 1.4 to 1.8 on the draw portion. I'm using a Ctac IWB holster at 4 oclock, Glock and a Tshirt covered with an unbuttoned shirt.
Good drill, I'll be running it the next few days and remember to write down my times. |

Yea, but I didn't want to 'game' it so to speak. I was working in the shop and just walked out to the range with what I had on. It is still with in reach, I'm consistantly under 2 seconds from draw to fire, its just refining it all and practice. Good practice, good metric. I suspect IWB/OWB and other holsters differences might make a differences. For example, does the holster cant the butt to press against the flesh (for max concealment) but thus complicate gripping it? |

I suspect IWB/OWB and other holsters differences might make a differences. For example, does the holster cant the butt to press against the flesh (for max concealment) but thus complicate gripping it? The holster I use for concealed carry is the CCC "Shaggy", and it has a pronounced wedge shape to push the butt of the pistol against the body. I can still clear a closed-front garment (like a polo shirt) and get a round on target in a reasonable time frame. As an example, I can draw and hit a 2" circle at 7 yards in about 1.8 seconds. It's all about the technique. Holster X vs. Y doesn't make a huge difference assuming that there are no retention devices involved. To help fix your speed, think about this: You need to move explosively to the gun...then establish a firm firing grip on the gun in a deliberate fashion...and then move the gun explosively up to your line of sight, pausing only to establish a good firm weak-hand grip...then do a press-out. Most people, believe it or not, waste lots of time during the draw simply by moving slower than they should during things like getting to the gun. |
