I've heard that this is common for LE applicants when applying. In the vast majority of states it takes a NICS check to get a handgun, love how in bizarro land NY they treat it like getting a security clearance or gaining access to nukes.

I myself I do not have a Facebook, twitter, Myspace etc. account nor do I plan to anytime soon. If that is a requirement, Then they can KMA. Yet one more reason to NOT bless that state with my presence.

I live in Rensselaer county which is next to albany. We have a very reasonable judge and pistol clerk however just across the Hudson River is albany county and they treat you like a criminal if you want a pistol permit. Every county gets to make up their own rules. Hey, it's only your first and second amendment rights being violated just get over it, no big deal.

There was a pistol permit holder down here on LI whose wife committed suicide with his pistol. His licencing agency (a PD) suspended his permit cause they said he didn't safeguard his pistol as she wasn't a permit holder. He sued, won, and they gave him his permit back.

Fair enough DanJ that is an example. However do you have any first amendment examples like the Facebook issue? Or it could be a privacy issue, maybe I'm not sure I'm not a lawyer. I'm not busting your balls but if you read my permit it says on the back "can be revoked at any time"......sounds more like a privelage and if they don't respect heller I don't expect them to respect any of my other perceived rights.

The department recently sent an applicant a form which asked for his Facebook username and password, and after the applicant complained, the department claimed the form was sent to him by mistake and was only used during face-to-face interviews when the department asks applicants for access to their Facebook accounts.

Updtae for you guys...this is on actual new stations now and the Cheifs story has changed, they deliberaltly includeed the form and now he is saying it was removed.....i fucking hate this process in NY

What an interesting official response on that FB page...
City of Watervliet Police: Mr. Dobbs, that form was erroneously included in the package we provide for pistol permits. It is an internal form that we utilize during interviews and should not have been included in the package. It has since been removed. It is, however, a common practice to view social media as a means to identify and determine character of a pistol permit applicant, in addition to other investigatory methods. We apologize for the confusion Common practice? Internal form for interviews?? So... interviews for police positions? Do cops need a "permit"? Or personal interview of the peasant daring to want a pistol, and they expect him to provide that? |
