Who all here that have a CHL, leave your weapons in your vehicle if policy forbids entering the building or facility. Do you have a safe or just hide it? Does the summer heat pose any danger to the ammo? Down here in Texas the interior of a car can reach over 150° and I wouldn't want to have a ND due to excessive heat if that is even possible. I would like some input on this question because I will soon be carrying to and from work. Thanks.

Cars do get hot, even here in Kentucky. No problem with ammunition cooking off, though.

The high temperatures probably do cause ammunition to deteriorate more quickly, though every center fire cartridge I have ever carried in a car has gone off.

My theory is to shoot it in practice after a hot season. That seems to work pretty well.

Temps would have to reach over 400deg to cook off rounds from what I have read.
If I have to leave my weapon in my ride I stash it in a hidden spot.

Company policy forbids me from carry but no one has seen it print yet. I live by my own policy so they can KMA. I know how to conceal carry.

The wife has to leave hers in the car- partially because of company policy and partially because its pretty tough to CCW in scrubs.
Me? There is no policy prohibiting CCW but im not going to ask either. Id likley carry anyways if there was non-legal policy- its pretty relaxed here.

Heat? Nothing to worry about- especially if you keep it in the glove box, console, or under a seat. Direct sunlight is what will get you both in terms of heat and UV breakdown (if you have a poly gun). Take precautions and have your windows tinted if they arent already, leave windows slightly cracked, and use sun shades. This will cut down on the internal temperatures. You sure arent going to cook off a round in your car but there is no use in letting everything get unnecessarily hot.

Having said that, I have left a VHS tape in direct sunlight, no shade, no cracked windows, no tint for an afternoon and the thing was pretty warped. Thats not going to happen unless maybe you bought a Kel-Tec product which I suspect is made from recycled VHS tapes
By that point you've done every position you can do without requiring the assistance of some eyebolts and ballistic nylon webbing. There's a point at which enough is enough

I can and do carry at work, BUT I do these in all cars for times when I have to "de-gun"

http://www.amazon.com/Secure-It-Handgun-Storage-Safe/dp/B000HBB15U

Won't stop the determined thief with a set of cutters, BUT will stop the smash and grab. Also, since I live in this shitty state of CT, they have a law about lost/stolen guns and I really don't want to deal with that aggravation cause in CT the gun owner is the criminal.

Good Luck

My employer has a no gun policy, I chose to ignore it. Concealed is concealed.

Thanks for the replies. I was more concerned about the effects of the heat more than theft while at work because the gates are key card activated and the building is secure from unauthorized entry by key card also so a stranger posing a threat would be unlikely.

I work at a local insurance office and there is no company policy, but my boss says no on the guns. I leave the 9mm in the car, but keep the .22 magnum in my pocket. I work in casual business attire with no coat, so deep concealment is hard. It also doesnt help that Im 5ft 8in and weigh about 140-145 pounds.

As far as heat? I keep mine in the console, 24/7. I live in on campus housing, and it is a felony to have a weapon in a building. I can risk my job, but I wont mess with a $30,000 per year education, and definately not a felony. I have a weapon to prevent crimes, not to commit them, no matter what it is.

That being said, I have 2 evacuation routes from every classroom that I have a class in, 2 from the room, 2 from each building, and at least three from my dorm. From work, I have the front door, and the back. No one can get in the back, only out. Since my desk is closest to that door, nobody is going to surround my position.

Situational awareness and having a plan is often better than being able to cowboy draw because you can carry when you want. If I dont have my gun, I have a way to get to my gun.

Thats how it goes. I dont risk my full size, but my pocket carry isnt going to be found. There is no policy, just a verbal "No" from the boss. Pretty sure he wont be too pissed if I save the office from some guy who is pissed that we wont pay out his auto claim for driving drunk and decided to go chainsaw on us.

yes; if you decide to keep it in your car, LOCK it up in a dedicated lockbox (NOT the glovebox)
this is an affordable box:

no on the ammo––it wont get hot enough to "cook" off

my advice: just carry your gun at work; concealed it concealed

Lets be clear about one thing:

If there is a verbal policy or something of the sort, go ahead. Second, Dont ask permission if there is no policy. Better to ask forgiveness if it pops up, and if you save a life, no one will complain. I also go on military bases for conceal carry. If these clowns say "Concealed is Concealed", and you work on a Federal campus or property, then take that advice and Flush it. If you work at a school or are taking on campus classes, flush that "Concealed is Concealed" garbage away. I carry against my verbal policy, but there is a difference between a conflict of beliefs, and a conflict with the Law.

Dont be the idiot who thinks they can carry on federal property and get away with it. Dont risk your families livlihood in a crappy economy over a gun. Some people will tell you that it is worth it and that if your job doesnt support it, leave. This is not good advice.

You need to weigh your situation. Maybe tell us a bit about where you work and what the policy is, and we can give you guidance. Carrying into illegal places isnt smart. If something happens, and you should draw, you may have just hurt your own circumstances. Carry to stop crimes, not to commit them. If you wouldnt carry without a license, dont carry it where the environment outlaws it. And dont risk a damn good job for a gun. Especially if you dont work in a place where that is a problem. I happen to work where angry people come in a few time a week, and nearby a pizza parlor that has been broken into 3 times, and I work into the night. I choose to carry. Concealed is Concealed. I also dont have a policy that will get me into lots of trouble if caught, and this job is not overly special.

I work on a university campus. There's no way in hell I'm carrying at the office. Carrying in the car is equally illegal. And yes illegal, it is state law.

I like my job. It took long time to get it. I'm not giving it up over concealed carry.

Not even remotely a concern. You forget that we have/had boys in Iraq. It gets pretty dman hot there.....far hotter than Texas. I have yet to hear of a single instance of the heat alone causing a cook off.

I work in a manufacturing plant as a machinist. We make bearings for the energy sector (oil, gas, windmills) and military radar installations along with aerospace and satellites. I do a lot of bending and stretching so it would probably be exposed at times and I wouldn't want to get reprimanded or canned for a violation of the COC here when it would be easier to leave it in the car. I would have to dig up the COC handouts that I got when I hired on but I thought I had read something about no weapons. This is a great place to work and I don't want to screw it up.

I am a fair hand with a knife, and I have (And I recommend this for everyone) a list of all my credit cards and the phone numbers to them, and all the security info so if I get robbed, I can get home, get to a phone, and freeze all assets if I get robbed.

I almost never have any reason to leave my gun in the car but I have a GunVault Nano box for those rare occasions. It was inexpensive and has a cable that secures it to the vehicle. It should stop the typical smash and grab. Don't worry about the heat, it won't be hot enough to effect the gun or ammo.

Kind sir, I have a 5.11 brand "Moab 6" satchel that I tote my portable electronic device in, that I also keep my FN PS90 in. I even have room for my scrumptious afternoon meal in my 5.11 bag. When I go to work, my meatpie goes into the ice chest, and I place my PS90 in my tool box. Only my close chaps know about where I keep my lunch. As of late, I have begun to bring along my grenade just incase of a sudden Democrat convention. Tally ho!

LOL at polecat. I have noticed that the center console in my truck seems to stay cooler than the rest of the truck's interior on a hot day. That is where the glock goes when it can't be carried.

Well, at least there is a use for those old video tapes, I would hate to think they all ended up in a landfill.

That said, I have one Kel-Tec pistol, and while it isn't anything to write home about, it does the job it was intended to do. Plus, I think it was made from an old copy of Weekend at Bernie's.
