THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
I need help. I've been reading multiple forums. Everyone has their own opinions.
Mine: I don't like glock triggers, beavertail safties, or trigger safties. I like a handgun to be staightforward. I like the idea of a revolver but don't like the low ammo capacity. In the interest of consolidating ammo, I am looking for something in .40 caliber. I have about $400 to spend. I know everyone is quick to say save a little longer, I wont.

I know there are some decent pistols out there in the $400 range. I just need some help finding the right one. Sig SP2022 looks nice but may be too large?
Sig P250, I've read some iffy stuff on them. Some like them, a lot don't.
The LCP line looks nice but awfully small. I'm not a big guy but I can't stand shooting tiny pistols.
The used market here in Madison is bad. Too many hippies. When you find something interesting it is over priced pretty bad.

Made in america is always great. If it matters, my first and only pistol is a GEN 1 Taurus 24/7. It's been great but has had a recoil spring wear out every 1,500 or so rounds. I'm looking for something a little more durable. Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

Just about everything in that price range without grip safeties, glock triggers, or trigger safeties is junk, except for a few.

That SP2022 is perfectly concealable, if that's what you're worried about. I don't know much about sigs, having never owned one, but I've always heard good things.

The H&K P30 would be perfect for you, but out of your price range. On that note:

1 piece of advice: Don't compromise on your carry gun. You'll have it on you every day, and you'll be practicing with it a lot. Get what you want, otherwise you'll be reminded every day of how you compromised.

Save up for a P30. Never held a more comfortable pistol, it shoots like a dream, is dead nuts accurate, and as reliable as any gun on the market, all in a package with none of the things you listed, available in .40.

$900. It better wash the dishes too...LOL

The reason I need to stay around $400 is That's my allowance. Two kids and a house means not much money flowing. The government was nice enough to give me some of the money they take illegally from me back so I figure I should spend it the best way I can.

The size is bulky on the SP2022 or so I've heard. I wouldn't be carrying every day. It is banned at work for employees but not customers(why I don't understand) so it would likely stay in the truck until the weekends.

An M&P .40 full size or compact would fall into your price range, you can get one with, or without, thumb safeties, magazine safeties and internal locks if you choose.

Both of my M&Ps have been exemplary and worked out very well for IWB concealed carry.

They sell locally for just over 400 bucks.

my 1st gun & carry gun was a G27. Sorry. Not sure why you don't like the glock trigger, you can change that & the trigger safety has zero bearing on anything when your trigger finger is pressing the trigger. Your brain will not care.

I've shot two glocks. I enjoyed neither. I just didn't like the feel I guess. The trigger is weird. If I found a good deal on one I guess I wouldn't rule it out.

I agree with this as well. I love my M&P40c, just get one without the safety, etc, you will love it!

Yeah, if you can find an M&Pc in your price range, go for it.

So I've been looking more. I've found some G27s for around my price range. Found a GEN3 NIB for $429 + $15 shipping...sounds like a good deal. Whats the opinion on these? I plan to go to Gander to fondle one to check out the size tomorrow.

I think the G27, M&P 40C, and the SP2022 are my final choices. Is there a middleground on the the Glock between the G27 and the full size? I get lost in all those model numbers.

I relate to this thread, as .40SW is my typical carry caliber in the form of a Gen.3 Glock 23 with GNS (Purchased at GSSF price a few years back for about $430 out-the-door). As others have already mentioned, the M&Pc in .40SW is a nice little number too, if you can get comfortable with the trigger travel.

As for Glock Numbers.

Full-size (Standard) .40SW = Glock 22
Mid-size (Compact) .40SW = Glock 23
Compact (SubCompact) .40SW = Glock 27

FYI, Glock 22 mags (15-rnd) work great in the Glock 23, and the Glock 23 (13-rnd) *can* fit in the Glock 27, but stick out a fair amount.

I'd jump on that G27 at $430 if you like it. That's my backup gun.

I carry a G23 in a pitbull holster. dissapears with just a t-shirt on. i have the G27, it's a great shooter and it's very rare that i can't take the G23, but it's nice to have a few G22 mags for them as reloads.

So I got the chance to play with some of these. M&P 40C is a nice size. How does the G23 compare in size? I also looked at the XD40 and was somewhat impress by that but it seems they don't get much play around here. How are they?

The M&P40C is larger than the G27 but smaller than the 23.

I'm not an XD fan, but lots of folks use them as well.

I have an XD9 service (4" barrel) and LOVE it. That's my every day carry gun. I didn't recommend one for you, since you said you hated glock-like triggers, trigger safeties, and grip safeties. XD's have all of them. I like mine because it's a very safe gun that can be holstered without fear of Glock-leg, but at the same time there are no manual safeties to operate, as it's ready to go as soon as you grab it. I haven't had a malfunction in years, and several thousand rounds of different types of ammo, ranging from the best (my carry load, Fed HST) to some of the worst (wolf, herters, etc). I can count on one hand the total number of malfunctions, and they all occurred within the first 200 rounds I fired. I guess you could say the, "break in," period.

Shoot one, see if you like it.

Instead of choosing a caliber and then trying to figure out which gun works for you the best, why not find out which gun you shoot the best and carry that one. Criminals will not be able to tell if they were shot by Speer GDHP 180 Gr 40 S& W or Federal HST 147 Gr 9mm.

I went to gander mtn and was looking at everything I could get my hands on. The XD40 comes with all sorts of accessories, are they any good(the accessories)? I want to buy something in.40 because I already own one.

Are you looking at the regular XD or the XDm? The XDm has all sorts of bells and whistles that come with it, like different rear straps, etc, but the regular XD has 2 mags, a holster, a mag holster, a speed loader, and a bore brush.

The holster is ok for range work. Not good for concealment, and due to lack of retention device, I would not OC it.
The mag holster is good quality. I don't conceal with it since I choose to only carry 1 spare mag, but if I wanted two I'd take it with me for sure.
The speed loader is great. Saves your thumbs when loading mags.

All the accessories are as durable as any other kydex product, though I wish the holster was a little nicer. For me, the mag holster and speed loader are the better accessories.

I looked at both. The regular XD peaked my interest more. I'm not big on the bells and whistles. I like how it comes with a short and long mag. I also liked how the M&P 40C fit my hand pretty well. I still want to hold the glock just to see how they feel. After feeling the trigger and grip safties, they aren't a bad as I thought.

Where does everyone search for used pistols other than forums? Gunbroker has a few, Bud's is mainly new. Used might be the best option for me as the M&P and the XD are both a little north of my price range. As states above, used market around me sucks. Anything that's a good deal is 2-3 hours away when you find them on Armslist.com

Thanks everyone for all of your input!

Unfortunately I probably won't get to shoot many if any of these. I will have to go on feel and everyone's best jusgement. The closest range to me is 20 minutes away. Range rental is $15/hr. Gun rental is around $20/hr. Add ammo to those and it's burning my money up quick. I will likely finger bang them all for a week or so before I decide. I bet the morons at Gander will get pissed when I keep stopping by to play...

hmm... don't write off the glock because the "trigger is weird". it's the most popular gun on the planet for a reason.
