Hey all. I am putting together a "most likely to fail" parts kit for my VZ. Can anyone help me on this? From your experiences what are the Achilles Heels of the VZ?

After I got mine I picked up a few basic spares, mostly on Ebay. Firing pin, extractor, and some springs.

No real Achilles heal, except for maybe getting the carrier tabbed.  All my rifles have tabbed carriers, although one of them I've been shooting with an untabbed one to see if and when the Gremlin would appear.  No problems after 550 rounds.

As far as spare parts, the top of the list would be gas piston, gas piston spring, striker spring, and recoil spring.  Then would come striker and firing pin.  Then extractor, extractor spring, extractor plunger.  Lastly, another complete dustcover, as those are more pliable and can be damaged relatively easily if reassembled hastily; you can put your extra springs on there and have it ready.

The best place I've found for springs are on Ebay, particularly this vendor.  Two complete and new sets of springs for $20 shipped is a killer deal:

As for the rest, you might want to consider all the small parts like pins, plungers, etc.  I found the vendors below to be the best.  Numrich has Facebook shipping coupons every Wednesday, and if you call their order number during business hours there is a recorded coupon to use online.  Bonesteel has good prices but shipping can take awhile.  Ohio Ordnance has some of the best prices and will ship USPS if you call them.  Will all the vendors, it's best to get a bunch of stuff all at once to save on the shipping:

Here is a sincere recommendation.  When I first got my VZ 2008, I spent about $125 getting the crucial parts listed above.  If you like the rifle and are going to keep it, the best deal by far for parts is this from Ohio Ordnance Works:

http://www.ohioordnanceworks.com/parts-sets/vz-58-parts-kit

I highly, highly recommend getting that kit.  I eventually got it, but I wish I did from the start as it would have saved me a lot of money.  Most complete VZ58 parts kits run about $300 -- the Ohio Ordnance kit is not only $25 cheaper, but it ALSO comes with the accessories, including four mags, and mags are getting more expensive and harder to find.  The other kits do not come with those extras.  If you subtract the value of the four mags and accessories, the parts kit from Ohio Ordnance is only about $150 shipped.  That will give you everything but the receiver -- all the little pins and plungers that love to zoom across the room and into oblivion.   It also comes with a fixed stock and all the hardware if you want to change it over from the folder.  Incredible value.  The parts in my kit were well used, but everything has worked perfectly.

I would just get another rifle from PSA over getting a parts kit. For $125 more than that Ohio Ordinance Works parts kit you have another rifle.

That's also a good idea.  I did that initially, but then kept on wanting to keep the new "parts" gun in play which caused me to buy another "parts" gun.  I stopped the destructive pattern by getting the OOW parts kit.

So far the trigger gremlin popped up, the hinge on the stock broke and finally the trigger quit working all together, this is after century "fixed" it. After all this I would suggest a trigger/sear assembly as it is pretty frail compared to most other assault rifles. Also springs and extractor.
