I've seen posts on some AK boards where people talk about Silver Soldering to permenatly attach a barrel extension, Hopefully someone will tutor me on the subject.

It works great but due to the heat needed it will almost always require a refinish

apply silver solder paste to threads
thread on extension / flash hider / brake
apply heat with map gas until solder is properly melted
let cool
done

I'll add that you must make sure that the surfaces you're joining are perfectly clean and that you must use braze that melts at 1200 degrees or more. If you use a braze that melts below that point it's not  considered "permanent".
