My M92 is still just a pistol with new quad rail installed. Do I need a tax stamp to remove the thread protector and install a muzzle break?

No fed law against it, dunno about NC

Ok, thanks. I was reading another forum with CA guys talking about tax stamps and muzzle brakes. NC is liberal compared to CA gun laws.

Tax stamp is needed for a sound suppressor, is that what they were talking about?

Not sure, but that makes sense.
Another question: Is the weld the only thing holding the thread protector on or does it also screw on over the threads?

Mine had some kind of loc tite-esque threadlocker on it. i hit it with a torch, no problem getting it off

It came off pretty easy. Used the dremel to bisect the weld, then struck it clockwise with a screwdriver and it came right off. And yes the protector is threaded on.

Don't know what device you're thinking about using, but be prepared for a little 'play' if you use a detent pin. My NightBrake has a little. My bud's has a krinkov style. He eliminated the play on his by using sandpaper to gradually shave the edge until it fit 'nuts on'

My M92 protector was loose as soon as I cut the weld, no threadlocker.  I just bought the gun 2 weeks ago, so I assume its of newer manufacture.

I had to use a thread file to fix the threads on mine before I could install a brake.
