Where can I start looking for the parts?

Do a google search for RPD parts kit and you'll find a few people that have/sell them.

Military gun supply
e-sarcoinc
centerfire systems

all the usual mil surp places.

Just be aware some kits don't include the barrels and some include U.S. made barrels.

Project guns is doing another run of builds as soon as he gets the receivers in stock.  He already has my parts kit and mine will be built in his next run.

I can't friggin wait!

Who make the good and best RPDs?  I have a nice kit and an 80% rec. that I may sell and pick up a factory RPD?

Thanks,
Ghilly

Matching numbers Polish RPD with original chrome lined barrel. Receiver refinished in Molyresin semi-gloss black, the rest of it was left untouched (finish was nearly in like-new condition). Interesting note: low digit serial number ends in 666... The Devil's RPD? Built by Meridian Ordnance LLC

Got a second RPD.  Had seven (Soviet/Chinese) to choose from.  This one made in the Soviet Union in 1951.

Cool! Thanks for sharing.
Do you know if that's a Type I or Type II RPD?

What happens to these captured weapons? Do they stay in the unit's armory and later get brought to CONUS when they rotate back?

If you're referring to the differences between the two types with the fixed/folding charging handle, this one is fixed.  Sources state that the gun didn't go into full production until 1953.  Gun will go to the ANA when we pull out or demilled.

I think the reciprocating operating handles got phased out somewhere between the second and third versions. It appears some were retrofitted.

It's difficult to find good info about RPD production. Most sources I'm finding state that large scale delivery of the weapon did not begin until 1953.
I suspect the Soviets mass produced them for a few years prior, so they'd have enough inventory to replace the DP as they fielded them.

Some sources split the variants into distinct types, like with the AK47, but others just have brief descriptions of variants.

This is the best source I found:

This seems to be one of the latest variants (Chinese). I believe it has the folding magazine bracket, since it doesn't appear to be riveted to the bottom.
