Sweet. Now the top half just needs an extended version that goes to the GB.
Again the top profile in current form will not allow this.

You guys are going to own the AK aftermarket at this rate.
Awesome. I'm glad I held off on the other extended rail! The integrated QD sling swivel attachments really make this shine!!!
Where is the bottom sling mount? Front, back, middle? Doubt I'd use it, but curious just the same.
AWESOME! Can "one" just buy the bottom half? I already have MI's 1st AK rail system.
Do you have to cut off the front sling swivel for the "X" like the other model?
The swivel on the bottom is at about the 5.5 inch mark. On the ss-x model you must cut off the hand guard cap. The hand guard is actually narrower than the cap .The slim profile does not allow it to remain. The hand guard feels very slim to the hand actually narrower than wood in feel. Bulk and weight are always one of the main concerns . loosing a hand guard cap is a minor loss when you gain all the swivel locations .If you don't want to commit run the standard length.

In the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.
Good judgement comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgement. |
Who knows what the future will bring. This design is interesting but something one must consider is the amount of flex in a mount that long. You must really add support to it or there is no sense in making it. I will keep it in the idea box and if I am satisfied it will work with a positive result I will drop the cash and tool up and make them. We are really enjoying the AK market . The key to this market is to make it work with most all the guns even though they have huge tolerance differences.

You've got to be kidding.
I just said to my friend not a week ago "I wish MI made an SS series AK handguard". I JUST ordered a new handguard set for my AK. |

Will the whole thing heat up more during firing vs a normal plastic handguard with heat shield?
These hand guards do not get all that hot when shooting. With all the shooting we have done with them we have had no negative complaints about heat. You can if you want shoot fast enough and long enough to heat any type of hand guard up to the point of being hot to the touch.

The pic you posted above shows a lower HG retainer in place. Is that a bolt on? |
The front hand guard retainer remains on the standard ss model . It must be removed on the X model

How is it secured to the rifle - barrel clamps, I presume?
The mounting set up is the same as the other AK models we make . They clamp directly to the barrel .

I'll get one
My body credit card is ready. The extended rail looks great, only a few oz heavier than a stock Saiga handguard (might even be lighter without the top) and no more rail than you need. I'll be picking one up when they're released.
I like the clean looks and the modularity. Nice to be able to put rails only where needed.

Any plans for a SS top piece too? This way users who prefer to run irons can have a slick top handguard w/o the rail? Just an idea. Good work guys!
At this time we have no plans for a smooth top. Thanks. Troy.
