THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
pretty sure im gonna go pick up a century tantal this weekend ... local seller .. decent deal ..

ive never had an AK of any variant before ... but i like the side or underfolders .. and i dont mind the 74 over the 47 regarding ammo ..

i know they dont have chrome barrels so i have to keep her clean .. but besides that and possible minor issues is there any reason not to get it? i damn near went to the local fleet farm and just bought a WASR for $450 when teh underfolders were on sale for that .. but something keeps holding me back on those plus i like to buy local and save a little money

it honestly wont get much shooting time because i dont really have anywhere to shoot it... its more of a want not a need .. but i dont want to waste money

also, whats a decent price on a used one with a few mags

thanks guys..

You need to check the seriel # if it begins with TTL then it might have one the infamous out of spec barrel and keyhole bullets like crazy. Mine is a Y00*** series and shoots russian 7n6 surplus fine. I haven't shot anything else since 7n6 has been cheap and available.

I paid $449 2 years ago for a NIB Tantal and mags WERE $10...now they are $20+ for surplus mags. I have bought some of the Tapco mags at 13.99 for range use and they are fine for that.
I don't really know what a used Tantal would go for depends on condition, number of mags, etc. If it is a TTL seriel I would want to shoot to make sure it doesn't keyhole.

The Tantal platform is an excellent weapon. You won't be disappointed.

As far as price...it depends upon condition and as metioned earlier "if it's an early keyholing" rifle. If it doesn't keyhole, is in decent shape & comes with a few magazines, I'd pay between $300 to $375.

I purchased my Century built Tantal in early 2010 (Y00 serial number, built Aug 2009) with a 1:8 twist U.S. non-chrome lined barrel for $399 shipped. It shoots great and doesn't keyhole. I too, only use corrosive Russian surplus ammunition.

Good luck & let us know your decision.

I picked up a TTL Tantal a few months ago and mine doesn't keyhole with any ammo either.

To answer the OPs question, $400-450 for a 'new' one is a good price; knock off $50 for used.

Most of the early CAI Tantals that had keyholing issues were "TTL" seiries. I guess CAI is using the prefix "TTL" again on newer models.

Mine is RI-1596-X with the 1:9 twist. I think it was the RI-1496 series with the out of spec barrels.

But I have heard of problems with the 1:8 and 1:9 on some Tantals mainly with the heavier 5.45 rounds. MIne shoots 7n6 with no issues so thats what I stick with.
But its getting scarce and is going up in price. Glad I stocked up.

I guess its still a crap shoot with CAI guns.

I see the OP is from Wisconsin. If you have a Mills Fleet Farm nearby they carry Tantals. That's where I purchased mine over here in the Twin Cities..
The Century Tantals should have a tag on the triggerguard that says what the build date is and what the barrel twist is. If the build is within the past 12 months and the barrel twist is 1:8 you're good to go. Fleet Farm pulled out a couple of Tantals and let me choose among them.
