I don't think it's a matter of whether they couldn't. They just didn't. Aesthetic choices they thought were good at the time.
I'm sure it will take some dye, but I've never had long term success with dyes. Maybe a Beryl upper and AK74-style lower would be a better compromise. |

Look on newest German G28 DMR rifle - every part in different color
Convince yourself that it looks cool and that it was military weapon, not car show exhibit and call it a day. |

Some darker reddish bakelite lower handguards match the upper handguard very well.
