THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
I posted this awhile back, but some of you have been asking questions again about whether the barrels offered by Polytech will fit the MAK-90.

The answer is yes, but you have to:

- Cut the breech for the extractor
- Drill and pin the barrel
- Mill the relief for the handguard retainer
- Drill the gas port
- Drill and pin the FSB
- Requires the early version of the Chinese bayonet

So this reaffirms my thoughts on why you should not pay $800-1200 for a preban AK.

Makes good fiscal sense to upgrade a MAK.

No, I spent a Saturday Morning with Mike at ORF last year and did it in a few hours.

If you have a local machine shop that's "project" friendly, you could probably go in and have it done for less than what a gunsmith would charge you.

Thanks krinkfreak,
I needed that info. Mark Tucker at CGA is going to install that same barrel on my NHM-90. I was'nt sure of everything that needed to be done.
Looks awesome!
I am trying to decide if I should have him install the underfolding bayonet fsb on my MAK-90 after he finishes my NHM-90.

Krinkfreak,
No, I have been hunting for one for a good while. I was looking at the EE yesterday, and found a new one listed, so I snatched it up. The stock set that is coming with my NHM-90 project from Thekatar has the groove for the bayonet on the lower forearm, so now I don't have to look for that.

I have a MAK 90 and love it and always have.
Does anyone remember 10 years ago when alot of people were trash talking the MAK. These rifles were cheap I bought mine from Inland Armory at a Stout Field show for $215.00 with 5 30 round magazines. Lots of people hated them, but now they are sought after and people are now paying a premium for them. My how times do change

I have a polytech with a threaded barrel that had its underfolder bayo neutered. Will getting a front sight housing and gas block with lug from the Polytech site and swapping them out accomplish the same thing Krinkfreak has done by replacing the whole barrel? TIA

Neutered The only fsb that I see at Kengs is the MAK-90 style, unless you buy the complete barrel assembly. They are out of the underfolding bayonet fsb. The MAK-90 fsb does not have the cleaning rod holder. I would just buy the complete barrel. My .02

Krinkfreak, would you mind to post a pic of the correct bayo for this setup? I just bought a Polytech barrel assembly for my neutered Poly (thanks Recline) and will need one. Where did you find yours at Knob Creek? TIA !!!

If you don't mind me asking, how much more did you put into that Mak-90 after buying it. I've been looking for a chicom AK but can't decide if I should fork over the money for a true preban. Also is there a gunsmith that can put the barrel on?

Bunn19,
Another route would be to keep an eye out for the MAK-90s that have the cleaning rod holders still attached, and the threaded muzzle. They usually have a "cover" tacked over the threads. I just bought one a couple weeks ago off GB for $380. Just my .02 cents.

and all along i thoguht my polytech aks didn't have a bayonet lug, as my AK bayo did not fit.

The one i've got is nothing like shown in the link. My barrel looks exaclty like KF's.

hmm.... i might jsut have to pick up one of them bayos. What good is a pre-89 AKS without a bayo?

Does the detent come installed in the FSB on those barrels? I'm thinking of buying one for the FSB and GB to do the conversion. Lets see a pic with the bayonet installed!

Ok, forgive my ignorance, as I'm somewhat new here, but I assume you guys are talking about taking a Chinese thumbhole-PC-sporting AK and turning it into a evil-as-satan-even-though-it's-merely-shaped-differently assault rifle AK, correct? This makes the US parts count thing an issue. How many parts do you need to be legal? Also, how do you remove the front handgaurds to replace them with US parts? Also, how hard is it to put in US trigger parts? What's involved? There's a nice thumbhole MAK-90 at the gun store I could probably get for a song that would look really cool with a plum stock set on it. Or maybe an Ironwood stock! Also, if you counted mag parts in your parts count, does that mean legally you can only use THAT mag and no other with that gun?

Yes. Detent is there.

I'll post a pic of the bayonet tonight.
