Sinatra your Russian laminate looks amazing. That's the exact color I have been trying to get for some time now. You are the only person besides Z Recto who I have seen produce such an outstanding color. I've been experimenting with the ritt dye and alcohol method, along with some others, and I'm definitely going to try this pine tar and shellac process on some sets I'm working on now. I have some Russian sets and one new Ironwood set I want to do like this, all laminates. I have most of what I need, but I'm still not sure where to get the pine tar for this. If you don't mind, what kind do you suggest? Can't be that hard to come by here in the good ol Tarheel state!

Edit to add > NM, found yavlar's thread on another forum...

Just got my first AK, an all matching WAS 10/63. The wood is damn ugly and this thread is greatly informative!

Sinatra, holy cow! You are amazing. I only hope I can get my stock to look half as good as yours!

Has anyone tried using a polyurethane after the pine tar? Wondering if there would be any adhesion problems? The shelac looks a litlle tricky to get right / smooth. On my old mosin the shelac is pretty brittle and flakes off easily, possibly due to the age but does your top coat hold up? The end result looks amazing none the less!

Thank you. I used Garnet shellac for those krink handguards.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but been looking around and this method is definitely the most authentic finish! It makes sense too! The Russians used their own amber shellac and that's it. Some were diluted down a bit, some were less diluted. Their amber was much darker then our current options. Props and taggity.
