ideally you wouldn't put a plastic stock on an SKS, they are just fine as they are.
that said, i've never heard of one melting. |

This I love my Yugo just the way it is. I keep giving my dad crap about "hot rodding"his Norinco with Tapco stuff and his cheap reflex sight. |

Choate and ATI make some good stocks. Tapco makes one too. The Choate is the best drop in (Dragunov style). But they move the pistol grip a little forward. If you have small hands it's OK. I like my ATI (Dragunov) but it has to be modified for comfort. Some serious filing above the pistol grip for your thumb. I also filed finger notches in the pistol grip. I also cut the stock at the rear of the receiver so it could be taken down without removing the stock. The plastic upper guard was replaced with a perforated metal one. I shortened mine for a better fit for me. Haven't melted anything yet. But I can't afford repeated mag dumps either! So if you like to tinker go with the ATI. If you want a drop in, go Choate or Tapco. Be aware most SKS guys are purists and will give you flack as a "Tapco f*cker" Mine are near the bottom of the SKS pic thread page 14. Also my Walnut SKS stock for those who like wood. A Choate stock is near the bottom of page 15. Its the olive drab one(not mine). |

The ATI Strikeforce stock is the best on the market right now, IMO. It's got a well made folding mechanism, uses commercial AR stocks, includes optional picatinny rail segments, and is fairly well designed. Locks up tight on my SKS, and it costs under $100.

The Ati stock is very nice and actually looks pretty sweet.

I've had two SKS's now. Both with the original wood, and both modded with Tapco's (BLK/FDE). I've done a lot of research into SKS's and I also shoot like a savage. Not saying I'm a good shot just that I shoot a lot of rounds through them and very fast, speed reloads, mag dumps, etc. I run them pretty hard. I have never ever had a problem. I like shooting the SKS's more than my AK's. Because the SKS actually doesn't get as hot in the hand guard, due to the little washer that keeps gas run off from going back down into the gas piston tube. Which creates an a$$ load of heat. Even with gloves it burns my hands, when doing mag dumps in the AK.
Its quite amazing, that these rifles came before the AK, when the technology in them is superior to the AK. With simple DIY mods these rifles will run like champs. The recoil is less and they are more accurate than my AK's by a long shot. Note that the AK's also have rubber buffers and AK74 muzzle breaks. But back to your question, throwing a Polymer stock on is a great investment. Its like having a whole new rifle. I don't see how the purists enjoy shooting musket technology(wood/bayonets...). You will not have a problem with it ever melting. Also, I would go with the Tapco for four reasons. Its more versatile(railed), much more durable, cheaper, and lastly better looking(in my opinion). I have shot all the current examples and liked my tapcos the best. How ever again I have done some major mods. Good luck ![]() |
