I didn't make any changes to it and neither did the previous owner(s).  I really  lucked up and found a Maadi Steyr (see www.avtomats-in-action.com/pro16.html) and got it for the deal of the century.  It is a true pre-ban and came into the US exactly as you see it.  It's as close to a AKM as you can get - it's just not select fire.  The Russians setup the factory for Egypt and about 2000 of these rifles made it into the States before the ATF put an end to that.  It was one of the first AK's to ever make it into the US.

Thanks for the compliment.

Here are a few pics of my newest AK;  a Maadi MISR S/A  that I traded a couple SKS's and a Turk Mauser for.

It was really ugly when I got it, as the previous bubba painted all the furniture with black spray paint!  I stripped the black paint off the wood and found gorgeous woodgrain underneath!  I covered it in clear spar urethane,  added a Romanian sidefolder stock and a Maadi sling.

This one is really growing on me!
John

I just picked up a thumbhole Maadi and want to convert the stock to this configuration. I think it looks great. Please see new thread and help me figure out what to do about the receiver's stock end (its not open?)

Very nice!  Sounds like you're going to do a Russian clone.  Just don't get your "Russian Red" wood furniture in the deep or bright red like the vendors sell on their "Russian Red" rifles.  Study up on the colors of the Russian laminated wood and you'll see they're a very different red than that "Russian Red."

Here is my Maadi RML. It is an early post ban made in Egypt and imported by PARS. I bought it new in 1993. I did the 922r conversion a few weeks ago and swapped out the FCG for a Tapco G2 along with US made pistol grip, upper/lower handguards, buttstock, and slant break.

My Maadi ARM imported by ACC/Intrac with Egyptian parts kit from Atlantic Firearms.

Swapped out from Egyptian parts kit:
- top cover
- butt stock
- pistol grip
- upper/lower forearm
- recoil spring assembly
- bolt/piston assembly
- cleaning rod
- slant brake

Sling is Russian.

Then USA parts for compliance:
- slant brake
- mags floor-plate/follower
- fire-control

Rough and going to stay that way .............

Looks Great to me!

What all did you swap out?

Close up pics of the changes?

Here's a Maadi MISR SA I re-worked.

I posted some pics recently of my Pars imported Maadi. It is a very early post ban all Egyptian/ made in Egypt. I did the 922r conversion recently and was having trouble with the Tapco pistol grip moving slightly no matter how tight I made it. I tried diff. srews etc, but it still did it. I was one over on the US parts count, so I used this foriegn pistol grip and it works perfectly. I think the grip is Egyptian, but I am not certain.

pistol grip 1
1/2x28 slant break1

the romanian side folder fits very nice with minimal filing.

So that's a US magazine?  I didn't know anyone in the US was making steel mags or steel mags with the flat back just like Chinese mags.

Naw, that's the original Chinese mag I got with it.

That photo was taken before I put any of the compliance parts in.

Here is my Egyptian MAADI. Not sure of the exact model or type but I only paid 199.00 out the door when I bought this.

I bought this many years ago and have thought about changing it over to look more like a real AK but really sort of like it with the stock like it is. I may order an Ironwood Designs stock set for it somtime and make it 922r compliant.

This is one of the most well made AKs that I have and it shoots great.

LR243, it looks like you have a gem in disguise.  You have one of the earlier ARM rifles - you've got a threaded muzzle under that tacked-on muzzle cap.  A bit of use with a dremel and off that can go.  Then add your a muzzle nut, muzzle brake, or flash hider.  And, there's Egyptian military wood furniture out there - a change-out of the thumbhole buttstock for an Egyptian buttstock and pistol grip would just about get you there.  All the items can be found at APEX Gun Parts.

Thanks for the heads up. I have never heard of Apex Gun Parts. I will check them out. You are correct. There is just the smallest of tac welds on the muzzle. Would not take much to take it off. I bought this at least 10-15 years ago if memory serves me right.  I know its not one of the China put together ones.

If you love the Egyptian wood, one option is to add a US slant brake, US pistol grip, and a Tapco G2 FCG, plus 1 more US part (mag follower or floorplate, or gas piston?). I recently threaded my own barrel on an early PARS RML and changed out the FCG and it was easy. Then if you go with a US black or brown (probably better) pistol grip, you could use real Egyptian wood for the handgurds and buttstock. However, I think you would need a US mag follower or gas piston to comply. I got this stock years ago while the ban was still on from gunbroker or ebay for around $20- lol. I am thinking of swapping out my black poly arsenal furniture for the original handguard wood (pic below) and the Maadi stock for a bit. I will post a pic or 2 when I do.

Egyptian kit
Virgin Romanian barrel
Tapco M-16 flash hider(1), G2 FCG (3), pistol grip (1)
NDS-3 reciever (1)
(6) U.S. made parts.

I still have to clean up rivets, drill RSB, GB, FSB retainer pin holes, refinish wood and fit magwell. Waiting on Bulgy mags from CDDN. I will parkerize later but I don't know what i'll do as far as paint.

It's funny to me that I just put this AK together and it has more wear than any AR I ever owned. (excluding my issued M16A2)

My Maadi ARM Pars import, Yugo stock (refinished with iodine), US pistol grip, Bulgarian upper hand guard (much better match).
