Quick question for those more knowing than I, does a "dragunov" stock make the saiga an assault weapon, if not converted to accept high capacity magazines?

I do not think so. See my tacked thread on Saiga parts counts.

This is open to interpretation, but the BATFE considers a "thumbhole" stock to be a pistol grip stock setup. Having said this, the addition of a PG "voids" the "sporting" designation that prevents the need to be 922r "parts count" compliant. Thus, if you add a thumbhole stock, you must be 922r compliant. IMHO, YMMV, etc.

922r applies to only rifles that take high capacity magazines, thus the saiga is exempt provided it only takes the 10 rounders and has not been modified to accept standard AK pattern mags. See my tacked thread for background discussion.

I suppose you could modify the high cap MAGS to work in the rifle and thus skirt the issue, but you'd be asking for it then.

dumb as hell definitions by the BATF and pain in the ass. I honestly think the only folks that care about the issue is us.

Ok, just to be on the safe side, I will need some clarification. I want to keep the original hand guard from the saiga. I plan on installing:

Dragunov stock
Trigger
Hammer
Disconnector

The rifle will not be modified to accept high cap mags.

Do I need more US parts or am I good to go?

I do not think you need any US parts, for reasons stated in the parts count thread.

But I am not the final authority, only a careful observer.

Actually, for purposes of the AWB a thumbhole was a PG, but for purposes of 922, it was not.

They make thumbhole Saiga's anyway.

Curious, does a part have to be made in the US period or can if be imported then modified in the US and still count

Could someone bump the conversion thread, so those of us without team memberships can read it?

Once a thread hits the archive it cannot be "replied to" again and thus stays in the archive. But all the relevant information from the old one has been included in this thread, so you're not missing anything.

did you have a particular question? I'd be glad to see if I can help.

Has anyone tried converting a Saiga legally using the Ace stock set?
It should count as two parts, correct?
Using it you should be able to use a handguard, and piston and get the parts count under 10.

Strange afterthough. Does the parts count increase when adding a pistol grip? It's not originally on the rifle, so does that bring it up to 15 parts, or does the count stay at 14?

I'm saying this because I'd like to be able to convert my Saiga back to stock configuration. (Yes, I have a real reason.)

Hey

I ordered my Saiga 762 39 with a 20 inch barrel. I have been reading the conversion thread for awhile. This is what I plan on doing to mine.

Tapco handle & M-4 stock ( 2 parts)

New hand guard to make the rifle look like an AK ( 1 part)

Surefire 30 round magazines ( 3 parts)

I guess I will leave the standard 10 round magazine at home when the rifle goes to the range.

I will post pictures of my brand new AK & its brother the Rock River AR-15

Here's my conversion with some wood that I've never even seen produced before. Like a camo laminate.

For those who are interested in a "non-converted" Saiga you could take the route I chose. Pics are of a Saiga-308 and Saiga-12. The primary components are the Ace mounting block with allows you to utilize the factory trigger configuration. You must ensure you're parts count is up to speed once you complete this type of build but with the US pistol grip, stock and magazine (3 parts) you're safe. Add in a US made foregrip or muzzle attachment for safety. This allows me to utilize the weapon in a pistol grip/folding stock configuration while being able to readily revert back to the factory configuration. The Ace components have performed flawlessly and aside from the poor factory triggers...I'm very happy with the builds.
