The fire control group, pistol grip, and buttstock is all you have to do, and it should be the same as the procedure I outline above. The only trouble I hear of is the hammer. The 308 hammer is a bit different, and some have said that a standard hammer that comes with a new FCG will not work properly. If that is the case, just use the original hammer and replace the gas piston for US parts compliance. But then again, others have said that they had no problem... YMMV!

How to install the BHO:

To install, I pulled dental floss through the BHO opening in the receiver, threaded it through the loop in the spring, and back out the BHO opening. Then I pulled down really hard while pushing the trigger pin through the hole in the loop.

If it's a SAIGA-12 keep the BHO. While you have the gun apart for conversion, grind down the external lever on the BHO a little. I rounded the lever on mine and shortened it so that it's not in the way of my trigger finger. The BHO makes changing a mag mucho easier as you don't need three hands...MadDog(760)

p.s. I built these tactical slings from the instructions on ar15.com! (actually I built 8 of them)

Ok, here's my plan for my saiga .308, hopefully I have this right.

Advanced Technololy thumbhole stock...1
Tapco G2 trigger group.............................3
Tapco AK gas piston.................................1
total 5

My questions:
Does it use the full length 6 1/4 in. gas piston? (I'm in Iraq and can't measure it myself)
What other part would you all recomend if the hammer doesn't work and I have to use the russian one?
Is the double hook trigger a problem on the .308 too?

"edit" I was also planning on using the original saiga forend.

Yes I did it myself. I found the information needed at Saiga-12.com. These are some great people with very good ideas. This is the thread explaining the procedure.
http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?showtopic=6728

This is the thread I started before knowing about the Tech section. The procedure I used in explained there. I also want to ad that the mags are very tough. I tried to make a two round hunting mag, with the leftover parts. Mine held three, so I had to modify it again. The only way i could get the magazine apart, was to cut it. I twisted, bent, dropped, and threw it against the wall. It was'nt going to come apart.

I'm converting my .308 Saiga, and I've run into some "issues".
Some are addressed on the Saiga12 page and others, but they're worth mentioning here. The big one is the saftey. The stock fcg does not have the flipper linkage, but a long trigger. I'm replacing it with the G2 double hook, and my SAFTEY DOES NOT ENGAGE. The tab on the saftey has been ground down 1/16" or so. Tony at Tromix says a stock saftey will work, or weld up the existing and grind to fit. Second is the disconnector spring is larger diameter than g2, a stock replacement or overbore is needed. I'd rather change the spring. Don't bother harvesting it.
Good luck, order more parts, and I still have to find a grip screw.

The above mentioned "hammer issue" on the .308- I had to file down a knob on the fwd side of the g2 hammer to clear the crossbar. The stock hammer is ground flat from the radius halfway up the hammer. Not sure how I feel about the single stage trigger, I think I'll buy at least one RSA adjustable. (I have a 7.62x39 left to do)

Good points, thanks. We knew there were issues with the 308 geometry being different. It's good to hear firsthand how things go. Please keep us posted.

Here is my Saiga 7.62X39. I put a wood butt stock on it and painted the butt and fore stocks with truck bed liner to match.

I like it...

Here it is at Bulletfest 2006 in Ohio...

Here it is taking a break with my SA-M7...

Take care,

Can anyone tell me if the .223 Saiga needs a "bullet guide" to be added when converting it back to original AK style? Thanks.

yes. 223/556 feed ramp is needed. You can get them from K-Var for about $12 I may have a spare laying around if you can't find one.
