I kinda want to pre-election panic buy a VEPR in light of Hillary's rhetoric about Russia.  I have a number of 7.62 and 5.45 AKs from other countries, and I have a substantial amount of 7.62x54R bought when it was cheap, and I reload .308 and 30-06.

I don't really NEED this rifle to do anything, other than be a cool example of a Molot rifle.  What caliber and barrel length would you guys recommend if buying a VEPR as a toy/investment right now? Thanks!

308 or 30-06 just for the cool factor, and since you load those you could probably tweak something nice. .308 if you want 20 rd mags

30-06 has adjustable gas too.

If I could have only one, it would be a 20" .308.  I have that and a 23" .308, both great rifles.

I would get the 20'' in .308 only because you reload for it. Should be a lot of fun to shoot as a range toy.

.308 is a popular caliber, a good, accurate round and there's a lot of ammo choices. 20'' is a good length. Not too long like 23'' but not too short like 16''. That's good from an investment standpoint.

You shouldn't have any problem selling it later if that's what you choose to do.

That said, it's a Russian gun so it should be a Russian caliber, so I just bought a 20'' 7.62x54R yesterday. I reload that round, so it makes sense.

For the record I am probably equally situated to shoot any of the calibers listed.  I have a bunch of greek hxp in 30-06 sitting around, a really big bunch of 7.62x54 crates, and some surplus .308.  I reload more .308 than the other two, but I have dies and components for all 3.

I already have semi-auto .308s and .30-06 of various flavors, but nothing other than 91/30s in 7.62x54.

It sounds like you've already made up your mind.

This could make a nice SVD forgery

Or a handy Vepr Hunter http://www.molot-usa.com/product_info.php/cPath/26/products_id/59

You're right, I'm leaning 23" 7.62x54, though the .308 is tempting.  I have a pile of cheap korean M14 mags that I could probably convert to work in a .308.

Well, then, you're just gonna have to get a semi-auto in 54R.

Get a 20'' barrel so you can have the Mosin Muzzleflash Fireball like this:

Mosin carbines have a 20'' barrel and produce these fantastic fireballs.
