The side folder leaves a small gap between it and the pistol grip. Its probably needs something to reinforce it. What do you guys suggest?

There is a gap, but it is still structurally sound.  A good portion interfaces with the rcvr - pistol grip screw pulls down on it, the tang screws hold the back end.  I have one on a 54r VEPR and it is solid.
