I picked up this 5.45 a short time ago as a "backup" Vepr.  It was converted and had a thumbhole stock on it.  I had some parts handy and that's what it's wearing now.

It's "brother" has an ultimak tri-rail which I'm pleased with.  Just thought I'd reach out and see if there's anything new that's vepr compatible before getting a replacement hand guard.

Not new to the market, but I had this one on my .308 Vepr for quite a while and liked it:  http://www.carolinashooterssupply.com/product_p/css-rifle-ar-slots.htm

Thanks.  I think I need a US handguard to use Combloc mags though.

Prove your Vepr wood handguard is not American made. ;) No ones even been "caught" or even charged.

Would consider, but I don't want to go the key mod route because I'm already "standardized" on picatinny.  Cool though.  I have KTR03v, and if not for "standardization" I would  seriously consider getting a krebs keymod ak

I had one of the CSS rails Liquidmetal linked to on my V2 Vepr and really liked it. Rock solid and felt great in hand.

Could you mount rail sections if you wanted to put on a light, etc.?

Yes you can. The Tapco and Magpul rail sections work just fine. I'm sure others that mount the same way would be fine as well. I don't like a lot of rails on that handguard so I used one of the Magpul MSA sling mounts and it works great.

I normally like Krebs stuff, but that gun is hideous imo lol.

300+ down the drain....  if it had an M4 stock etc it might balance out but as is... blech.  No offense.

I would take the css round handguard and save 220 bucks for other stuff...

What front sight is that, and did you install it yourself?

Aside from the CSS handguard and a similar paint scheme, the front sight is the only thing I'm debating moving...

That's actually a factory front sight. It's a V2 version Vepr.

I sold the V2. The front sight was great, but the rear sight sucked. If it had a standard rear sight the V2 would be awesome.

Well, I was thinking of removing the front sight and replacing it with one like the V2, but I think I'm just going to slap on an MI mount with an AimPoint and call it a day...

The Canis magpul adapter is rock solid. The only issue I had and am still trying to fit myself is there is a slight gap in the front where the top and lower handguards connect. VERY slight, but noticeable to me.

I hear you.

Mine just got delivered today.  I bought the "pre fitted" handguards.  I got them on, but I was annoyed by the fact that 1. I had to do a lot of fitting myself, and 2. I had to file all the tabs up front about 1/3 of the material to get the front piece to align over the threaded hole.

I also had to cut off the last section containing the vent hole in the upper hand guard.

Finally, they didn't send a screw to affix the front retaining piece, so I had to reuse the original handguard screw, which sticks up about 1/4 of an inch.  Looks like crap.  I'll order one, but given that I spent over $100, I'm annoyed that they didn't send a threaded screw of proper length and I had to do more than just casual fitting.

Saiga handguard works on my Vepr 308 with some modification. Needs to cut short the rear tang, drill a new mounting hole just a bit in front of the Saiga sling mounting hole to use the original Vepr mounting lug. Barely clear the Saiga sling attachment screw! The biggest challenge is finding a 5mmx0.5 fine thread screw which is hard to find in US. I bought a threading die and made one! The mag in the picture is a modified M14 mag.
