I don't think they can be dated by serial number. If you can bring a magazine with you, preferably a surplus steel one, to check for wobble. Moderate side-to-side is fine but front and back can cause jams. I ended up having to get a longer mag catch to fix mine.

Last two digits on WASR = Year of production. This is a 2004 model
