For that matter, the Valmet "RPK" was as-rare but at 2x the cost. |

When I got my legend, the dealer had two, and the national match was the one my buddy got, whats really rare, is the scope mount that fit the base on the rifle at the end of page one, Kengs never had them when I called back in the day, and I always figured the National Match was just a PC way to get an RPK model into the US.
Gotta love that M1C cone flash hider though, the chicoms were only about 40 years behind on technology when they copied that one. BTW, the cone flash hiders actually degraded accuracy thats why they went to the slotted on the M1C/D Garands. As the 223 with a Montreal importers stamp, I saw one for sale recently, and....... Its probably one that was imported into Canada, where Norinco's are still legally sold, but, very mighty likely be illegal here if it was imported after the import ban. It really sucks to go to a Canadian website and see guns that you can't buy...HERE. I wouldn't really go about showing it off to any customs or ATF agents, they may find it contraband and keep it. |

Yup, Canadians got some interesting Polys. I recall a newspaper clipping my bro secured for me in back in '89 of a NativeAmerican-Mounty stand off somewhere in Montreal. The accompanying pic shows an insurgent with an RPK-style rifle laying on the ground at his feet sitting pretty on its bipod. Nothing like it, to my knowledge, was ever introduced into the United States civilian market.

Not the rarest but also a rare version 56-2 type PolyTech model AKS47/2 rifle with a longer Galil type folding stock, optional factory vented handguard and optional factory AK-74 type muzzle brake, was an '89 KFS import, bought it brand new in early '89 before the mid '89 import ban. It's been said that only about 200 to 400 of this model had been imported because it was released just before the '89 import ban. This model are still available sometimes new in box if you look around. |

Rarest probably goes to the .223 RPK, and the "triple underfolder" model with the factory bipod cuts in the front handguard.

All Black Poly-tech side folder 5.56 Nato
Good luck finding one. I remember when I could have bought a NIB for $350 back in the day.
For every 100 brick-red side folders, you might see a black one, this was when you could get them.
I haven't seen one in years.
This is what the red one looked like (7.62 x 39)

What about the 84-s? I had one that was an underfold in .223. It was a Polytech Pomona Norinco. I had the two mags plus 3 more. I just had to sell it a few months ago so I could fix my pick up.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() These are sometimes called an AK-2000.
A long time ago, Polytech imported these. They look exactly like the 7.62 brick-red side-folder only they were black and chambered in 5.56 Nato.
Does anybody else remember these rifles? |

I remember the black side-folders. I had a red one which I sold back when Norincos were EVERYWHERE and recently found the box. I took a deep breath before picking the box up hoping the gun would still be inside....

Does anybody else remember these rifles? Several years ago, I had both the Polytech .223 sidefolder and the Norinco .223 sidefolder in black Bakelite. The poly was simply marked "AKS 223" and did not have the typical Polytech marking on the side... just the polytech import stamp. The Norinco was marked 84s-5A. Both had the same factory code - 66 ETA: sold them both to the same individual for $3K, because I needed a vehicle at the time... I should have sold a kidney instead! |

Lots of those were made and imported into Canada (still bringing them IIRC), cause of their crazy barrel length laws... they also have several variants of stamped rifles with 18" barrels. I've even seen a double folder "stamped" polytech - but was told they were not exactly rare, anywhere but in the US. |

I talked to a guy who swears he once seen a Legend underfolder with a screw in barrel at a gun show. I'm pretty skeptical, but I could tell he did definitely know his pre bans and he had a lot of high end pre ban guns so I did wonder.
