Hey guys,

I'm a new AMD-65 owner that's looking into changing the front handguards to the standard wooden ak handguards just like the picture below:

http://www.ar15.com/archive/topic.html?b=4&f=77&t=76597

If there is a company you could direct me to that is manufacturing and selling these modded tubes or if there is a member who wouldn't mind modifying one for me, I could PayPal you the money for your time and the part.  I hope I don't sound like a moocher or anything, I just don't feel comfortable attempting this modification on my own.

Thanks Guys,
Randy

Looks like he did it himself.
"My AMD-65 wears standard handguards. To use the TDI upper a regular gas tube with handguard retainer would need to be cut down and flaired. I used a Bulgarian AK-74 gas tube on mine. I cut to length, leaving a little long and then heated it with an OxyAcetlene torch and pressed a 3/8 socket extension into it to flair it to fit over the gas block. Then grind to length."

Thanks for the help, I just don't have the tools to complete the job.  If anyone is interested in helping,  I can mail my tube to you or just keep my standard tube and pay you for a tube.

There is someone that will mod your gas tube. I do not know if he is a member here or not but he is on several other forums.

There was one on eBay in the last few days.
It sold for $15.

I would be willing to purchase a modified tube as well. PM me if anyone is interested.

Is anyone selling them these days?

See 'SA85M Question'. Ideally you would want the gas tube and hand guard from an SA85M with short gas system. Most of them have the standard gas system but a few were made with the AMD65-length gas system. The modification of the standard gas tube doesn't seem that difficult but it would be better to use a factory tube that was hardened after forming. If you heat the end to flare it and then don't quench it properly, it will take the hardness out.

I found my gas tube on the EE and then put SA85 furniture on it.

For inspiration:

I used to make short gas tubes, I would cut them to length, heat the end with a blow torch till it was red, then pound them over a 10 or 12mm socket I dont remember, it was easy money though, took 10 minutes

Personally, I fail to see why anyone would want to pay $500 for an AMD65 and then do everything they can think of to try to make it something else.

I only paid $400.00 each for mine and for me it was a matter of taste. I simply like the wood furniture better. That and it only cost me a total of $ 30.00 to make the swap so why not ??

Because its fun! Cant really put a price tag on that.

Same thing with Motorcycles. Gotta do stuff to them to make them your own.

I used a tube from a Draco pistol. The tube's short enough that after you file it to length the flare still remains. Also had to file the other end to get it to the correct shape.

Even though it's old post, it is very helpful. Question is: where to locate a Draco gas tube???

I got mine by putting up a WTB ad in the EE.
