I have a post-ban SA85M. I'm in the process of trying to deban it, and collecting some spare parts at the same time. I've read on this board before about these rifles having two different lengths of gas tubes. Is there a way to easily tell which one I have so I don't get parts that won't fit?

On the subject, are there spare AK parts that will NOT fit this rifle? I see a lot of AMD65 parts out there, but I don't know what parts of these are interchangeable.

Sorry, I know my AR's but I'm an AK noob.

Thanks.

Standard(MAK 90) gas tube is about 7" total length.
AMD gas tube is around 5 7/8" total length.
Just a couple guestimates

Thanks but I'm talking specifically about the SA85M gas tubes. Apparently some have a longer tube than others. This appears to be specific to these guns. Anyone with SA85M knowledge that can help me?

I'm looking at spare parts for it, and I'd like to pick up some AMD parts while they are cheap, but I'd like to know if they will fit. Thanks

Short will have less than an inch in between the hand guard and gas block.

Standard will have about 2.5 inches between them.

Perfect. Thanks for the measurements. That's exactly what I needed.

SA85M post-ban rifles came either with the standard AK gas tube or a special shorter one that utilizes the AMD65 gas piston. Most of them (the great majority) have the standard gas system. Either way, the AK63 vented steel forearm with pistol grip also used on the AMD65 works. The problem is, with the standard gas system, the AMD65 gas tube is too short. So if you want to make an AK63, you have to either get very lucky and find an original AK63 gas tube, or you have to make one out of a standard gas tube, which is what I did. Actually there's not much to it. You pop the spot welds around the hand guard retainers as carefully as you can, then sand/file/grind down the remains of the welds and paint it black. Here are a couple of pics that show the difference in the AK63 and AMD65.
