Got it off Gunbroker for $700. I was following a kit on GB for $450 that was missing a few small parts when I saw this completely buit rifle so I got this. Funny but it went thru several auctions without a bid. It's on an Armory USA reciever.

That is a great find. Congrats on the purchase.
The 63 is a tough one to find. There used to be alot of "AMD-63" kits around, but they've dried up. You did great on the price too. |

That's a major score. Also very easy to switch back to standard AKM front end with a regular gas tube and a set of handguards. I have an SA85M that I convert back and forth sometimes to the AK63 look. One day I was clowning around and made this oddity:

Thanks, I was following a kit for $450 but it was missing a pistol grip and grip screw. Then I figured $100 reciever+$250 builder+misc parts would have $950 in it so I pulled a trigger on this one. I know what you mean about GB altho I've never been burned but I've had some anxious moments. there are some kits around but it was better for me just to get the rifle.

Got to shoot it today. First off the bench at 50 yds actually was pretty close not a tack driver but shot very well. Moved out to 100yds and 4 rds only 1 on the paper plate. Shooting high, moved the sight down a notch and 4 more all on the plate. The wind was howling at 50mph and gusting higher. I was shooting in a rock pit but still wan't pleasant. Fired 40 rds no FTF or FTE Academy Monarch fmj. It has a good trigger so I attribute the shooting to the high wind. I did 20 rapid fire and it ran like a clock. I am very happy with it and it is a great addition to my collection. I have a nice 2 AMD 65's now need an AMMS and AKM63f to add.

Taking all the models together, I think the Hungarians are the most innovative and best-looking AKs ever fielded by a single country. I feel very fortunate in having the commercial SA85M and an AMD65. Even the standard AKM and AKMS with the black finish and blonde wood are stunning, then you get into the AK63 and AMD65. And you have to shoot these FEGs - they shoot better than they look. My two both prefer Yugo ammo, so I let them have it. It's worth the extended clean-up to keep them happy.

I just bought a AKM 63 kit from a guy that had it posted on Gunbroker as a AMD 65 kit. I notice a blonde but stock in the pic thinking that shouldn't be there. Looking closer the barrel extended 6" byond the sight block. I got a really, really, really, good deal on it. Now I must decide to get it built and should I keep it and have two AKM 63's or sell it and get a AMMS..

You have Hungarian parts and really would only need the Hungarian gas tube with the handguard retainer and a stock set from Ironwood Designs. I'm jealous man... I love my SA85. They are definately the highest quality AKs out there. |

That is a thought, or I may just look for an AK 63F, it would be great to have an AMMS tp have a full house.

A post ban SA85M will cost you around $800 if you find one and then trying to find the proper gas block with lug and front sight assembly.....stock set... maybe gunsmith... it will cost you almost as much as the Steyr preban. I converted my SA85Ms but only because I already had them. You already have the parts in your AK63 kit. It would be much easier to just build that as an AK63F. |

I was playing around in the shop yesterday and found the Saiga gas tube fit perfectly into the AKM 63 so I have two spare gas tubes. I also put t blond bulgarian upper and lower hand guard on the AKM 63 and with alittle fitting I can get it to work and it looked prety good. So are the basic rifles the same AKM 63 and AK 63f ? I had a SA 85M with the short gas tube. I sold it 2 yrs ago it brought $1050 on GB post ban.

Basically it is just an AK63 without the stamped metal lower handguard and with a standard upper handguard/gas tube. It would be super easy to go from one version to the other. In the mid 70's Hungary went to the AK63F to cut down on production costs. The 63F is more like the traditional Soviet style AKM. Other than that the parts are identical. |

The blonde stock is correct for AK63 and AK63F if it is the Hungarian type with no 'lightening' cuts and the sling loop on the bottom. It also should have the cleaning kit compartment and the 'trap door' buttplate. So, I gather the AK63F is basically the same as a SA85M pre-ban, like this?
That's the configuration I have my post-ban SA85M in now, except I'm using an AMD65 muzzle brake on it. |

Yep... that's exactly what an AK63F is.
