I pulled the trigger and put a KASSNAR SA-85m (just the rifle and one mag 90%-95% condition) on layway.....$1500 OTD I know its a little steep but my theory is what are the chances of coming across another one...

Not bad man. I would pay that for one if I saw it on the shelf. Good stuff you'll love it.

You can always look for a SA85M KBI thumbhole stock version. $600-$800 I believe that's what they are going for right now when you can find them. De-banning them is easy. Ironwood stock set, Tapco FCG and you are set. If you want to go further you can replace the front sight base and gas block to get the bayo features and add a US made slant brake. Its some work, but a fun project and still cheaper than a Kassanar.

I've got a KBI "ban" SA-85 version with the thumbhole stock. I've since removed the thumbhole stock and replaced it with a Hungarian wood pistol grip and buttstock with correct leather sling. Also inserted a cleaning rod to give it a better look. Won't thread the barrel, although I have the die to get it done.
This rifle is one of the most smoothest operating and accurate AK's I own (except for the Polish 1960 Milled version I have). |

what happened, I got a great deal on one last year at start of the summer and nice ones with most of the original accessories were around $1100. A nice one in box with everything was $1400 or so. There were actually quite a few you could find on GB. Now I see only a few with one in box sold for $2350.
Locally on my area internet forum, someone sold a milled Bulgarian underfolder for $1200, would rather pay that than the going price on these hungarians. |
