I never use a safety, ever on my any guns. The finger is your safety... You can remove the lever if you want, just double check your weapon always .

As long as you have control over the trigger this is not a problem. Good grip with the finger off the trigger and high on the frame.
However, the issue with the rifle is that still be in your manipulative but you don't have control of the trigger (such as slung over your shoulder, or only held by the handguard).
True that a handguns can be handled with out control of the grip, but that would be careless. Not so with a rifle.

Does anyone know of a rifle that doesn't have an external safety that prevents the trigger from being pressed?

You can remove it if you want, but I think that your gun will look really stupid without it, and then you'll lose it. Dumb idea.

Most (all?) older hammer fired rifles. Best example that is a repeater that might be reasonably expected to be carried with the hammer cocked being the older lever actions.

I agree it's completely different when talking about a pistol and a rifle. Pistols do not need a safety, because if you are holding it ready to use it the safety is your finger off the trigger, if you aren't holding it then it's in your holster and the trigger is covered. With a rifle when you are holding it ready to use it the safety can still be your finger, but when it is slung or you're holding it by the handguard or carry handle the safety should be on.

a pistol should be carried in a proper holster––ie: one that secures it AND covers the trigger guard to prevent anything from fucking w/ the trigger

a military-grade rifle should have a manual safety if only becasue the trigger guard is NEVER covered, like when its slung

NO firearm in working, operating condition should be kept w/ an empty chamber, UNLESS its not drop safe (ex: shotguns and hunting rifles)––Any long gun or pistol which someone's life is staked on should be loaded (as in round chambered, full mag), mechanical safeties "ON", ready to go.

if not, its not the gun, its the operator. and its more wrong than dick cancer. ymmv
