I have been wanting to make some proper AK SBRs and finally got around to it. I've been shooting my 107FR since 2008 which is a great rifle but I wanted to try something a little shorter.

I flirted with some ideas like making one from a M92 but eventually decided to go with Arsenal's instead.

I SBR'ed both an Arsenal 106CR and an Arsenal 107CR. 7.62 is definitely my preferred caliber in an AK and my favorite when I can go to my outdoor range. Sometimes though I can only go shooting at night after work at a local indoor range that allows 5.56 but not 7.62. With the 106CR then I can at least practice more.

I had a local engraver called Laserworx do the tramp stamp. They are awesome to work with, did the engraving while I waited, and even let me watch!

I e-filed the form 1's and got approvals in around 37 days.

I then had Adco cut the barrels for me. Steve did a great job with a very fast turn around.

The boosters are from JMac customs and fit both rifles perfectly. They do a very admirable job of cutting down the flash too.

The 107CR was reliable out of the box although the trigger reset was a little sticky at first. I think the disconnector was dragging on the hammer a bit but that seems to be smoothing out. Other than that the 107CR is great to shoot, very lively with the shorter barrel. I could be crazy but I think it is even more accurate now than before the chop. I have around 1000 rounds through it so far with no issues. I been shooting both GT and Wolf.

The 106CR needed a little more work to get running. The Arsenal disconnector broke clean in half at around 60 rounds. Arsenal sent me a new one which has since been working fine. It also had some problems feeding at first where the bolt wouldn't completely close. It took some researching but I eventually figured out that two factors were contributing to this: the charging handle was binding at the front of the dust cover and the finish on the rails and bolt carrier was really gritty, like rubbing two pieces of sandpaper together. I lightly filed the high spot on the dustcover and lightly smoothed down the finish on the rails and she has been 100% ever since. I have about 1000 rounds of UMC and Federal .223 and XM193 5.56 through it with no problems.

For anyone contemplating this, I say do it! They are much better in this state than how they come from the factory with the barrel sleeve. The balance is great and the lighter/shorter profile is very nice to shoot with.

Here are some pics:

NICE RIFLES! It is always nice to see an sbr that is not an ar. I need to get my act together and get a stamp for an ak!

I just sbr'd my 107cr last Sunday after a 45 day eform wait. I think your right about the accuracy, mine seems to be shooting tighter after the conversion. I also have a JMAC booster and it makes it alot less blasty. Where at in PA are you?

Nice group! How do you like the Ultimak on there? I have thought about picking one up for my 107CR. I have an RS Regulate on my FR and like it but want to keep the CR foldy.

You need a cleaning rod :)

I'm in Delco, where are you?

I really like the Ultimak rail, I had a red dot on it before it was shortened and plan on putting it back on their. I am going to pick up a AMD 65 cleaning rod and it should be a perfect fit.

I am in Bucks County and a member of Langhorne Rod &Gun Club if you want to meet up and shoot as a guest hit me up on the IM and we can set something up.

Awesome, thanks for the offer, I will take you up on that. I normally shoot at Souther Chester County and like it there but have also been looking to try some of your shoots. Looks like we could have our own Arsenal shoot :)

Maybe a silly question here but I am very interested in making a slr107 my next SBR project, does adco have to press out the barrels to but and thread them?
Link Posted: 2/7/2015 8:43:05 PM EDT
[#11]
I think they do it without pressing out the barrel. There is nothing to thread, the threads are on the front sight/gas block.

Here is a pic to help. This is after they have both been shot and lightly cleaned; there is still a good bit or carbon I didn't bother to remove. The orange stuff is anti-seize.

I do love the 107cr sbr. Those look great! I have the CR and love it! But I'm most excited for my holy grail 107UR I've got waiting for paperwork. I do love me some 7.62 SBR goodness!

I'd love to find a 107CR. However, I've been offered at NIB 106CR for $950 - So I've been thinking about.

Is the 107cr still made/imported?

I have a 107 ur that I was thinking about sbring. Do you have to put a booster on the end of them? Does it help out a lot?
Would it be best to send it to ADCO to get it cut down or is there someone in TX that is dependable?

No, however I believe there are rumors of them coming back. Who knows. Arsenal is weird.

Is it true that there is a restriction ring installed in the FSB that has to be removed on the 106CR and UR carbines?

I think not on the CR, at least mine doesn't seem to need any gas port work. Have a few thousand through it now and it runs like a top.

Regarding the UR, found some info in this thread: http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_4_82/150060_Converting_Arsenal_106UR_to_SBR.html

Thanks for the link, when I get my stamp back I'll chop mine and post results. Worst case, if it doesn't work I can send it to someone who can make it work.

When I chopped the barrel on my slr106ur it would not cycle. The gas port was too small in stock form. Sent it to slegdhammer arms to get fixed.
