THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
After a thousand rounds down range with my Arsenal 107CR, I decided that to shoot it well with my old eyes, I'm going to have to put a small red dot on it (just bad eyes coupled with front & rear site distances).

Recently, I bought the rear site replacement mount (from Midway) that allowed me to mount an extra SPARC red dot I had. Liked it because it was simple, didn't change the look of the gun that much (want it to remain as close to stock as I can), was low profile, etc. However, it did not work well on the 107CR. Primary problem is that the mount will not stay locked down. You tighten screws on the side against the rear site mount but it will still pull off. Also interferes with taking on/off the top cover and won't co-witness (not a big deal for me - this is a range gun so if the red dot fails, the worst that happens is that I just go home).

With this platform, I'd like to get opinions on either a replacement fore-stock with top rail or a rail on the receiver cover. If fore-stock, is it possible to replace just the top part and leave the bottom stock? Do not want rails all around - if so, what do you guys recommend for this rifle - does this model limit my choices? If a rail on the cover - are you just adding one by drilling/welding (rather not) or are you replacing and with what? I ruled out the side mount - they just look clunky to me and not necessary for a little red dot.

Many thanks,

Matt

Anyone have any insight or experience with the Texas Weapon system? Just prefer a red dot a bit further back - like the balance better...

I have a TWS on my SGL-31, with an RMR mounted. It's a great mount. Rock solid, and retains zero. I like to have the dot closer to my eyes, as my vision isn't the best.

I also have an Aimpoint on an Ultimak (two actually). Until something new comes out with radical improvements, the Ultimak is the best option IMHO.

I have a scout scope mount on my SLR-107 and love it.

Replaces the rear leaf sight with a rail.

ETA: I can take my top cover off no problem with the mount in place, and if i need to remove the gas tube, the rail removes from the mount itself and retains zero when replaced.

I just did this with my rifle, using the MI optic specific handguard mount: http://www.midwestindustriesinc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=391

I am using it with the Aimpoint T1 Micro, and it works well. It does alter the look a lot, and the balance a little, but I like it, its very practical.

Quick update on the 107CR. Decided to go with Texas Weapon System. After a bit of a wait, it arrived. Great quality and works exactly the way I'd hoped it would. Looks good, holds zero, relatively easy install (I had to grind one part slightly to make it fit - total install about 20 minutes).

At any rate, big thumbs up - wanted something for a simple red dot that didn't involve quad rails and lots of changes to the basic platform - this was it for me - 107CR is now officially complete and I shoot it far better.

Sorry about the delay on getting these pics up - too much life getting in the way of my hobby....

At any rate, here is the 107CR with the integrated rail and a small red dot. So far, this thing rocks - very solid and stable - haven't lost zero in 2-300 rounds and a few cleanings - low profile and doesn't really change the look of the AK which was my goal. You'll also see my modification (different thread) - took out the rear swivel and replaced it with a snap that can be taken on or off. Recommend both mods.

This (Texas Weapon System) looks more like what I'm after. It REALLY? hold ZERO? How many rounds have you shot? Have you had to take the cover off for cleaning and put it back on and it still holds zero? Tell me the good and bad please.

Thanks.
