i am not big on ak platform but we have a semi auto ak47 short stroking, ejects the spent round but does not fully strip the next round from the mag, tried different mags so not a mag issue, weapon is clean and lubed

was working fine previously, weapon has a high round count, tried a gas tube we had on hand with no improvement

manualy charging the weapon works fine, weapon is 7.62x39, full length barrel and gas system wood stock

ideas? thought maybe the oprod/piston is wore out?

Remove the bolt carrier and gas tube, then probe the gas port with either a standard AK gas port tool or a small punch.

The gas tube is little more than an alignment for the gas piston to make its way back into the gas block.  It doesn't affect function enough to matter, and there is a video on youtube of an AK cycling without the gas tube.

That'd be very unlikely.  Its not a component that's going to wear out even for several lifetimes, even if it were, you'd be able to see the wear on it.

  1. If you've already checked for an obstruction in the gas port, you might check it again.  That'd be about the only thing I could think of that would cause the type of issue you described.  Check it by sticking a 1/8 drill bit through to see if it runs fully into the barrel.  Its possible some copper jacketing is causing an obstruction.

  2. You didn't swap out the recoil spring at all, did you?  A Wolff extra power or PSL spring could cause that issue.

  3. Make sure there is nothing in the back side of the bolt carrier, blocking the recoil spring from being fully inserted.

  4. Also, try different types of ammo, its possible that you got something under powered, but it would be odd.

Hope that helps.

As he said, if all else checks out try some different ammo. Tula is sometimes thought of as underpowered in case you were shooting that.

If it's shortstroking either you're loosing gas or the acting is robbing energy.

You're not using a recoil buffer, are you? If so, remove it and try with live ammo again.

Do you have a after market trigger installed?

Pull the dust cover and remove the recoil spring. If you manually move the bolt carrier back and forth does it move freely w/o binding? You should feel some resistance when the bolt carrier runs over the hammer, but that shouldn't prevent the bolt carrier motion.

Also check that the stripping lug of the bolt isn't hitting the magazine instead of the cartridge base. Do the same check as above but have a empty mag in.

Are you using Tula Ammo?  It is underpowered.  Although generally, if it ejects, it should chamber.
