I have an arsenal ak and finally got to shoot it...when cleaning it I tried to get upper handguard/gas tube off but it seems stuck...any ideas?

Get a pair of pliers and a cloth, put the cloth on the release so you don't damage it and raise the release. Sometimes you don't want to raise it all the way as it will not let the tube out, so try just a little at a time.

Appreciate the advice...I could do the release...the problem was getting gas tube out...it had some spring on it I guess to make a tighter fit...figured it out finally hand to push down on tube and spring then wedge a screwdriver and leverage it out

On the '74, the spring pushes the bottom tab of the tube into it's slot in the RSB.  while counter intuitive, it often needs to be pulled rearward during R&R, not pushed forward.
