Does anyone know what the tab/hook on the bottom of the buttplate is for?

I was told it was to keep the lower handguard from getting damaged when the stock is folded.  Not all of them have it.

Just a piece to mate against the handguard having greater surface area than the edge of the metal butt forming a groove in the handguard
