Who makes one that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? Say $600 or so and isn't century? I remember waffen works but they're gone.

Arsenal.

Or find a kit and give it to a reputable builder.

You aren't going to find anything new in the $600 range these days. Think more around $800-$1,000.

Unfortunately there is no 5.45 guns available new for $600. Used you may be able to find a Waffen works or similar kit build for around that. But you risk getting a gun with issues. Alternatively you could watch for a SAR-2. I have seen a few pop up for $650ish.

With current kit prices I don't think it is even possible to build a 74 for less than $600. Especially if it will be your first build. Paying a quality builder like ARS will put you north of $700 after the kit, receiver, and compliance parts.

Good luck finding a "good" one for 600. AK parts kits aren't a dime a dozen anymore.

Don't go cheap on your AK74.  The only ones that I would buy would be a SLR-104FR, VEPR, Saiga, SGL31, SAR-2, Interarms Tantal.  Other than that, it's a total crapshoot.

Got my Centry for 450 at a cabelas. Well worth it for a beat up training rifle.

Save up for an SLR-104. $1100. It will be worth it.

Seriously it was worth it to me to spend a few $$ more and get the Arsenal over a century.
If I had found another Romak II I might have bought that but they aren't to common these days.

I bought my Arsenal SLR104fr from Atlantic Firearms for
$1066 and they gave me a discount for being a member here,I just emailed them and they gave me a 1 time promo code to use.
they are very nice helpful people to deal with.

Used 104s come up for $900-1000 pretty often. Hold out for a good one.

I bought a m74 years ago. The first was a dud and had to send it back to century. The 2nd one is ok. Not as accurate as my 104 and not as smooth. Found 1 for 800 but id save and buy a 104 or vepr myself.

well the good news for the Romy fans is Apex just sent out an email and they have Romy 74 kits. So some of those hard to find items just got a little easier to find. Been years since I had a Romy 74, may have to reopen that door.

^ Plus the cost of a receiver, bbl and building it if the OP doesn't have the tooling.

I don't understand the purpose of the kit at the price they are trying to get for them. Is there something I am missing. To the OP I would hold out, I see SAR2 come up locally and a few other builds, for the $700-800 range.  If your patient they come around, I would get a VEPR personally but I already have a 104ur, and a Saiga.  Good luck!

the point for the kit is this:

original Romanian FSB and FH for their 74s have been almost unobtanium for years, maybe even a decade. Suddenly these kits show up, now you can get the rare hard to find non-us made copies and have a bunch of spare parts left over. A little expensive? Sure, but if you're a collector, have a CUR in you safe that still has the crappy thumbhole stock, this is the motherload in terms of proper restoration. Of course if all you want to do is magpul f%$# your rifle, then I can see where one might be confused.

Ok thanks for clearing that up, I guess if you had a improper set up or rifle that could be made into something special I can see it from the collector stand point.  I at first looked at this from the point of a proper barrel, receiver and assembly your into Vepr, and Arsenal price point already etc.  thanks!

I got an SLR 104FR and I absolutely love it, I'm no expert by a long shot but it's beautifully put together and shoots great.  I think I paid around $1060 so it wasn't cheap but I have no regrets, worth every penny.  The folding stock is nice to have and honestly besides getting an RS regulate optics rail I can't think of anything on it that I would what to change.  Just great out of the box.

Anybody know if Arsenals new non-folding line will include a 5.45 model?

I really want another 5.45 and Im tempted by the FIME VEPRs for 1k but Ive already got a VEPR and I wouldn't mind trying an Arsenal if it was a little cheaper.  But AT the $1000 level Id prefer the VEPR.
