I would to throw this out there in AK land.   I'm looking for a top quality AK in .762 X 39  but off the shelf.   I don't have the money to spend $1500 - $2000 on an AK.  I don't care wood or plastic furniture both are good.  I'm looking for a plain AK  no rails or bells.

What's out there?

Vepr is it.  No other AK is as likely to be perfect out of the box.

The current best offerings come in the form of the Russian Molot VEPRs or the Arsenal Sam7 or SLR 107.
Here are my Two VEPRs and my Sam7SF.

Mak 90. Can be purchased in almost new condition. Excellent quality. Lighter than a Vepr. Available in both stamped and milled. Best for the money!

The best bang for the buck would be an SLR 95 . Built in a military factory that has built millions of AK's .This not a parts gun put together in some ones garage. This is not a pieced together POS century arms battle field pick up parts gun. They do not have a scope rail or a bayonet lug . They have a good mussel brake and a chrome lined barrel . The resale is great and the quality are the best. You will have to deal with the thumb hole stock . This is a forged and milled gun that you can find for around $800 .

If I wanted a Bulgy milled AK, I'd get the proper SA93. True milled type III gun with the 45 degree gas block, & heavy barrel. The 95 is an AKM on a milled receiver. Or, get a milled MAK90.  GARY

Whatever route you go, make sure you buy from a reputable dealer that will exchange or refund if you get a problem gun. Your chances of getting a lemon are high, even with an Arsenal, Vepr, Saiga, etc. They all have shit quality control.

I recently bought an SLR104 that has some issues. I decided to save 50 bucks and buy off Gunbroker instead of AIM or Atlantic. Now I am at the mercy of Arsenal, hopefully they make the situation right but I have heard lots of bad experiences over the years.

I'll echo the positive comments about Veprs and their quality...you will be hard pressed to find a better built AK. Almost no one complains about Molot QC, ever and they are probably one of the rarest AK to have complaints on gun forums.

The only downside to Vepr's is that they use non standard AK furniture and because of that it's hard to mix and match for a traditional look. They are also generally heavier than other stamped receiver AKs and overall have less muzzle device options without using some form of adapter. I've had a few Veprs and highly recommend them

If you go the Arsenal SLR107 route let me second the advice to make sure you buy from a reputable dealer. I have many Arsenals with zero issues, and in fact have never had a bad Arsenal yet, but the forums have enough people with issues that it wouldn't hurt to have good customer service on your side. I've been super lucky over the years and recently with my SLR104 purchases, but others have not been as much
