I ordered a set of Ironwood Designs RPK furniture to de-ban an NHM-91.  My plan was to send this off to Z_recto to have it refinished once I get
the stock set back.   However, I noticed recently that the site looks revamped and they offer a Soviet shellac red iodine finish for their laminate wood.

I ran into a milled Norinco angle-cut MAK-90 and I was looking to order an AKM-style stock set for it.  I saw on Ironwood Designs website that they
offer the above finish for $60.

Has anyone here had them do it for them?  This is a picture of their description from their website:

This is their "Russian red" finish on birch.

I got it in Jan. IIRC. The pics don't do it justice, I'll post some more later.

Yes, it does.

I really should have the milled MAK90 properly converted into as close of a Chinese configuration as possible, but I don't feel like it, and someone else can always do it down the road.  I will definitely get the muzzle threaded.

Looks like I'll have Ironwood Designs do all of it.

I would if I had the time, but I have too many other projects cooking right now.

Thanks, I really need a new pic. I've been posting that one for months.

I tried to get another pic of the hand guards but lighting sucks in my house at the moment.

It will take one evening of work, applying a coat every 30-60 minutes. 5 or so coats will do the trick. Let cure for a couple days and then knock down the shine with some OOO steel wool. Easy.

If you screw up or dont like it, strip it with denatured alcohol and start over.

Not their shellac but IW on MM. Some don't like the "high gloss", I dig it

Nice.  That's basically what I'm looking for.  A few questions:

Is that the Birch Laminate wood?

Also, is that a "fat" AKM grip?

Who did the finish on the wood?

Also, the muzzle doesn't look threaded.  Is it?

Nice to see someone finally calling a finish "Russian Red" that doesn't look like they went to Home Depot and asked for fire engine paint.  Last few years it seems all the "refinishers" coming out of the woodwork (no pun intended....okay maybe slightly) decided that if they just called something "russian red" people would buy it (and sadly a lot of people proved them right) no matter how incorrect or flat-out fucking ridiculous it looked.

Good on Matt for getting it right.

That's a huge pet peeve of mine.

"Hey, look at my RUSSIAN RED furniture!"

"What makes it 'Russian' red?"

"Well, you know... It's red... and on an AK..."

Most authentic Russian finishes are more brown than red.

Same here.

I've seen a few that look like someone hit it with red Krylon.

I'm considering them for a complete set in "Russian Red" for my newly acquired Arsenal SAM7. I hope that it will be worth the wait (and cost).

My Chinese NHM-91 RPK stock set should be in soon and I'll post some pictures.  I contacted them and fortunately was able to add on the Russian Red finish before the stock set was shipped.  Very lucky!

Don't let anyone from the ak forum know you put a Russian style finish on Chinese style wood.  I got a PM lashing from a damn ADMIN over there for putting a triangle folder on one of the '03-dated M92 parts kits.  Apparently he was highly offended I built my own shit in a manner that he did not agree with, and he even threatened to ban me for it.

I get the purist mindset, but holy shit.

I also have a triangle folder on an M92.

Wood can always be changed out so I don't see it as a big deal.  I like the idea of the purist mindset, but it would take quite a bit of time, money and effort to get it all right with correct furniture, finish, markings, etc.

I had to first compromise on buying Bulgarian instead when I really wanted a Russian one. Then I had compromise on using US aftermarket parts to be 922 compliant since I don't look good in an orange jumpsuit. Ain't life a bitch.

Well Sputnik, I'm impressed with their copy of Soviet coloring. This is a pic of my '74 with authentic Soviet hand guards. The color
is almost identical to yours.

They now list the correctly styled/length butt in the milled section, the old website only listed the longer European shaped butt.

Nothing if put on a Euro AK. But since several people recently bought the wrong butt because they didn't know the correct T56 existed for the milled from Ironwood, now they know. It's always been available, you just had to ask them.

Having spent some time overseas I can appreciate European butts, although my Finnish wife does not share my admiration despite my explanation that Ironwood possibly uses Scandinavian birch.

Bottom line:  use iodine and amber shellac or you risk ridicule for calling whatever it is you DO use "Russian" anything.  <img src=http://www.ar15.com/images/smilies/smiley_abused.gif border=0 align=middle>

IWD clearly does it right.  Now to just get word to the masses that "red" != "Russian".....

I was able to contact Ironwood Designs before they shipped out my Chinese NHM-91/RPK stock set.  They only recently updated their website so I
hadn't realized they did wood refinishing.  Hopefully, it will ship out soon as the wood was almost done and they were refinishing last week.  I will
post pictures of the set when it arrives.

Perhaps the indoor lighting doesn't do it justice, but there is a slight red hue in it. Anyway, for a Bulgarian rifle it is damn close enough.
