Just received this flyer from K-Var, looks like a factory converted VEPR; is it likely that they're being imported as VEPRs and converted?

FM-AK47-11 Now available for pre-order!
FM-AK47-11 - Priced at $999.99!

Built on the same standard as the RPK style machine guns, Vepr is 50% more reinforced than a standard, stamped AK rifle. Each rifle has been manufactured using state of the art technology, effectively creating a heavier duty piece that will last through not just a lifetime but for many generations to come. The RPK-style barrels are hammer forged and chrome lined using techniques that make them four to five times stronger than a standard AK barrel, which makes them with substantially extended service life over other types of assemblies.

Vepr AK rifle in 7.62x39mm caliber, 16.5-in barrel, stamped receiver, chrome lined hammer forged barrel, removable muzzle nut with 14x1mm left-hand threads, 1000 meter sight leaf with adjustable windage, Cleaning Kit and Cleaning Rod, black polymer furniture, Warsaw length buttstock with hidden compartment for cleaning kit, shipped with one 5-rd magazine, 922(r) compliant with US or foreign made magazines.

Features:

For the first time ever true factory Molot AK-47 style rifle in the US market
Heavy RPK-style hammer forged chrome lined barrel
RPK-style 1.5mm stamped receiver
RPK-style trunnion block
RPK-style ribbed polymer handguards with stainless steel heat shield
Polymer original Warsaw length buttstock with cleaning kit trap door
Windage adjustable 1000m rear sight leaf
Scope mount side rail
Accepts all mil-spec double-stack AK-47 7.62x39mm magazines
14x1mm left-hand muzzle thread
922r compliant with foreign made magazines

I'm happy to see these don't have that damn slant cut receiver.  Looks promising.

As long as all the important parts are Russian made, I might get one.  I almost bought a VEPR a few years ago but didn't want to install the bullet guide... hopefully these have that already.  Would look good next to my sweet WASR.

Would be almost perfect if it had bayonet/accessory lugs.

That's what took the wind out of my sail. I'm dying for an RPK variant and would have even been happy making one of these into a short barreled RPK... but no.

This.

It's a heavy barreled Russian AKM of sorts. Molot produces excellent rifles and it takes AKM furniture.

Looks like a solid choice IMO for a good Arsenal alternative.

Pretty much.

I don't have the need, nor the desire for an AKM with a thicker receiver in what is essentially a ban configuration.

Am I wrong... I thought RPK was different furniture than AKM? Which furniture fits this new Kvar rifle? Also is it me or is the barrel on Kvars version different than the profile on my sporterized vepr?

I agree with this. I think they just took an RPK, cut and threaded the barrel, and move rear site back.

Its a huge step in the right direction I think.  I prefer the thicker receiver but the ban configuration is a bummer though.

I know nothing about AK's.....what is the "pre-ban" ak that everybody wants or wishes they had gotten?  I presume this is a 922(r) issue?

Pre-ban rifles can be sold in ban states and bring a premium.

Doesn't Russia have the issue of military caliber to contend with? I still don't know why we got the 223 RPK instead of 545.

Speak for yourself. I have one of the older Robinson RPK rifles and prefer the shorter 16in. barrel for 7.62x39.

As far as ban features go, I suppose having both lugs and the cleaning rod would be preferential, but I have progressed to the point where I don't care about superficial things. The threaded barrel, double stack mag well, and pistol grip are things I use and this rifle has them. This looks like a worthwhile variant and I will pick one up if politics don't become asinine.

Picked mine up from the FFL yesterday. It is one solid feeling rifle. Way more balanced than my M72, with the 16" barrel. Nice fit and finish. I don't like the plastic "US" furniture, so I'll be looking for wood replacements soon. I haven't had a chance to get out to the range yet, so I can't comment on how it shoots yet.

Can you tell us if standard AKM hand guards would fit; or, if only RPK hand guards do.

Also, I take it the the gas block is NOT interchangeable with an AKM gas block?

Thanks,
Mike

Standard handguards can work, but I would recommend against it.  AKM gas blocks will not work.  You need a RPK gas block.

I would order an RPK stock set from IWD finished in their shellac red if I had one.

The handguards should be pretty close to drop in.

That would probably double the cost of the rifle, close to it anyway.

I had one. Sold it to fund my SGL31. I kinda miss it but not enough to pay what people want now, or to drop 2K on a Russian VEPR RPK clone.

Gorgeous! I want it just for the squareback, screw the bayonet lug, could dump that side rail too and i'd be happy.

....so when my wife calls and asks you what this must-have Christmas present is that she needed to call you about, you know what to do right? And you totally heard me say I was really going to sell something else this time to defray some of the cost too, and I sounded very serious when I said it.
