By that I mean, no add-on's, no modifications-needed.  For the guy that just wants to walk in the store and buy the best, most reliable and accurate AK.

Give some technical reasons and general costs as well.

In both 7.62x39 and 5.45x39.

If you want the best you want a Hungarian, Yugo or Chinese pre ban.

Doesn't answer your question or fit any of the specifics you mentioned, but it's my favorite and I just got it done.

M92 for SBR project.
Arsenal for build quality
Wasr for price

And of course you can go pre-ban or ban era and de ban it. In my opinion the Chinese AK's are some of the nicest to come in the  country.

Chinese preban

Vepr  chambered in 5.45 with sgm tactical magazines.

Pap 92 or Pap M85 pv. Both are all European parts and completely built in Serbia. No Century arms or Kvar drunken monkeys had to work on them.

If you don't include a bring back or pre-ban, do you only mean currently in production?

So you're just gonna go ahead and rule out :

Hungarian SA-85's, 63's, 55's, AMD65's

East German MPi

Polish Beryls, Tantals

Chinese AK47s
Chinese 56's, Polytechs, Norincos, NHM 90, 91, Mak 90 etc.

Russian Vepr's
Russian SGL 20's, 21's etc.
Converted Russian Saiga's
Krinks
Dragunovs
AK47 type 1, type 2, type 3
RPK's

Romanian SAR 1's, PSL's,
Romanian M10's

Converted Yugo M92 and M85 carbines
Yugo M70's, 72's, 64's, 76's, 77's, 80's, O-paps

Egyptian Maadi's

Bulgarian SLR 95, 93

Iraqi Tabuk

Finnish Valmet

Israeli Galil

...wow. Yeah, just buy a Wasr dude, or pay twice as much for an Arsenal that doesn't really do much for the extra coin. There's really nothing left to you besides American-made-with cheapie barrels and parts after that.

I own a Chinese MAK and a Blugy SLR105A1; to me, they are top tier AKs; may not be cream of the crop AKs, but they are up there.

Lately the best AKs are Arsenal or kits with original barrels built by reputable smiths.

... Arsenal again lol

The Yugos from century are good too, but arsenal does a more precise job and uses new parts (not used parts kits like some manufacturers)

I've used arsenal, century and keeps and they are all good but accuracy was best on the arsenal and fit and finish was tie arsenal/krebs

You'll never get a consensus on this. AKs aren't fungible goods; they're all slightly different and thus every comparison is, by definition, an apples to oranges comparison.

Oh, that's easy, Vepr, Arsenal, Romanian, Yugo (Zastava, Serbia actually), and anything American made. In that order.

The FullerKrebDAKMetc. stuff is just plain ol AK's with some bolt-on crap you could do yourself plus some ridiculous de-horning stupid, and for this they want a couple grand, stay away from that kinda junk.

Stock combloc rifles FTMFW. Season to taste with furniture and optic of choice.

They're selling for $750 online with the thumbhole stock.  Check Gunbroker, Atlantic, or the usual sources.

OK guys...

Now, let's say I want a 7.62x39 AK.  No "needed" mods, just a turn-key, stock, current production rifle.

Two categories;

1}  Price is no issue.

2}  Under $1000.

Which one to get?

Have at it.

You need to clarify what you mean by "needed" mods.

It sounds like you want an Arsenal, you should just get one and be done. Under a grand then buy a WASR.

I think you answered it.

The "needed mods" was a reference to those that say "Get this but you need to add this..." etc.

Thanks for the info.

Sad to tell you that all currently made AKs on the market are junk. It is a hit or miss. There is no consistency in quality. They are made from much inferior materials than they used to.

Category 1 - Arsenal SLR-107.
Category 2 - WASR, 10 steel surplus mags, and a case of ammo.

I do love my NPAP but the WASR will take all standard AKM accessories.
