Seems those two makers are about the only available option these days.
Already have an Arsenal SLR107fr that shoots great, even though I don't think it was worth the $1000 + price.
Thinking of giving the DDI that Classic has a try.
Will I be disappointed ?

Arsenal, of course.

Can't afford it?

DDI

Another option is the sgl31, $1350 at tombstone tactical.

I can afford the Arsenal, but I'm afraid I'll end up with a crooked one.
Was able to see my SLR 107 in person before I bought it, but can't find a 104 locally.
I was thinking DDI's CS would be better if I did get a messed up rifle.

DDI is solid for the price, I have a 7.62 U/F of theirs and its straight as an arrow

Arsenal.  No question about it.

Probably not, since there's many things you can't fix after the fact.

I had a real crooked arsenal front sight block.  Sent it to a different gunsmith rather than Arsenal.

That being said, If Arsenal is one of the choices to get, Arsenal is the answer.

I really like my SGL31, but it has by far the most finicky dust cover of any AK I own....takes a while to put back on.

DDI all the way!

This coming from a former SLR-104 owner.

ARSENAL.

Bulgarian built with a cold hammer forged barrel.

X4

If you buy a 5.45 rifle - the #1 requirement should be a Russian / Bulgy / Romanian barrel

The Arsenal for sure.  Although the finish on the DDI is better.  The Arsenal is got a cheap paint finish over parkerization.

I vote Arsenal.

I have an SGL-31 but I really want an SLR 104-UR that I can SBR.

Is there an AK with a cold hammer forged barrel less than what the full tilt custom guys charge for their guns?
Could be factory, could be semi custom.

In a sense all AK's in the American market are "semi custom" to be 922r compliant, right?

For solid proof of their crappy finish, do a search for a recent thread at AKFiles about paint bubbling off an Arsenal rifle during testing - totally unacceptable for a $1000 gun.

If get what your asking. Your best bang for the buck ak74 with original barrel receiver factory built is a Romanian mk2, cur2, romak 2 sar2. Excellent overlooked ak74s that can be found in the $400-800 range. I have had arsenals slr and sgl, Bulgarian kit builds also but i really liked my sar2 & intrac MKII. Look around on the used market for them.
