I remember when they were considered the bottom of the barrel.
That's always the way it seems.
No. I disagree. That's the way it
WAS.
My first AK was a SAR-1. I caught an unbelievable amount of crap for my "cheap POS" rifle. I encountered a lot of grief for my "ugly spray painted rifle with plywood furniture". Many fortunes were foretold that I would die from the rifle blowing up in my face. I was told to quit being cheap and get a pre-ban Chinese, an Egyptian rifle, or even a used Intratec if I could find it - wonderful advice when a pre-ban rifle was $1200 and I was sweating a $330 purchase
.
I bought it in 2003. It was $330 OTD with two 40 round magazines & tax. 40 rd mags were $20/ea, 30 rd mags were $35/ea, and I couldn't justify 30s at the time. I was ecstatic a little while later when I landed two 20 rd mags at $25 for the pair as it doubled my mag count. I was damn near broke when I bought my SAR-1, but I just HAD to have a centerfire rifle, and that AK was all I could afford. Ammo was $2/box, or the same price as Wolf MT .22LR. What really pushed me over the edge to buy a SAR-1 was all the advice I received to "Go buy an SKS, it's cheaper!" No, it wasn't. They were $350 on the rack next to my rifle.
I don't have a negative thing to say about the rifle, only glowing praise. It has gone bang every time it's been asked. Trigger is fine. It's taken every single mag I've tried and used in it. It's still about the same color as it was when I bought it, although the barrel has gotten too hot to handle more than once. Sure, it still has shaved ears and a naked muzzle, but it's not been a priority to deban it.
Every time I see a nostalgic thread about a SAR-1, I have to shake my head and laugh. Who knew this "cheap POS" would have a cult following?
